Having read through the thread posts, converting the Aifix Sunderland, the bow section

and rear turret section will be your biggest issue, depending on whether you build your

Sandringham as one with the turrets faired over, or a total conversion, where the entire

bow and rear section were rebuilt.

Addition of  'Liner" type windows as opposed to portholes (they did retain some portholes).

The WEM set (interior) won't suit you here, as  Sunderlands turned Sandringham,

had the flight deck quite different to the military Sunderland. if you can find photos of

Kermit Weeks Sandringham/Sunderland you should get some ideas.

From the photos I have seen, it appears that the Aerolineas Argintinas were previously

Mk V Sunderlands, so will have the R 1830 Pratt & Whitney engines, as opposed to

the Bristol Pegasus Mk XvII's . Note the Cowling will be different also as will exhausts

(fish tail type).

Good luck in your build

Regards

Alan

Hi All! I haven't yet started work on this conversion... family life is taking all my energy! (and happy for that).

So far I'm still a "passive modeller", keeping up to date with FSM, Internet and a few other magazines.

I forgot to mention, Squadron makes transparencies ... these are obligatory to replace the kit items.

Cheers, Diego.

A Big A** File.  Typically something you see used on a lawnmower blade, not plastic.

About 2 years ago, I got a bunch of bits for the Airfix Sunderland. www.aeroclub-models.co.uk is your friend here (gun barrels and engines), and so is www.whiteensignmodels.com (interior and exterior etch).

Thanks for the info guys!

I did google "Shorts Sandringham", but the number of hits was a bith higher than expected. So I went to the Forum to see if I could contact anyone who have tried this conversion. Big Smile [:D]

Cheers,

How to proceed?  Start with a sharp knife, BAF, lots of spare plastic, putty and references:

I started with "short sandringham" on Google...

Conversion from Sunderland to Sandringham?
Posted by dpdelhoyo on Friday, November 28, 2008 9:52 AM

Hi All!

Back to the Forum, after a looooong time. Too much work + a new bub = less hobby! Big Smile [:D]

I do have somewhere an old AIRFIX 1/72 "Short Sunderland", and given that it'd take a lot of effort (based on online articles I've found) to build a decent model, I thought it'd be good to invest that effort in converting it to a "Sandringham" in the colours of "Aerolineas Argentinas" (I was told that was part of its fleet, need to researche that).

Problem is: how to proceed???? Confused [%-)]

I'd appreciate if you can give me hints on: bibliography/documentation, plans, conversion kits, etc.

Not urgent, but needed!

Thanks & Regards,

Diego, Cool [8D]
