In the naval aviation role the F4U, in the land based role the P-51. Both aircraft flew through most of WWII and into Korea.

The B-24 ended up winning though. The B-24 crew even got some really good pictures of the whole thing cluminating with the Mavis losing altitude in flames.

Ive also read of a couple times that B-29s on dumbo missions would spot Japanese trawlers then go strafe them a bunch. One I read of would dive into the trawler letting the bombardier fire with the forward turrets then let the tail gunner fire on the way out. The other one I read of basically orbited the trawler and let one of the side gunners train all four turrets on the boat.

Personally I like the P-47 then P-51. While not used during the daylight much I still think the P-61 needs to be in the list too.

On edit: the admiral shot down by the P-38s was Yamamoto.

Yamamoto! That's the guy's name! Oi. I hate that feeling of knowing who i'm talking to but i forget his/her name... to only have you remember it at 2am two days later.... We should start to pull for the unusual fighters like the "F-17 Flying fortress" and the "F-24 Liberator"!! I agree about the P-61. it pulled its share of fighter duty and was supposedly very deadly.

Hey, you have any of those pics of the '24 "dogfight"? or at least where i can get them?? Big Smile [:D]

Oh Come On!! You have to fine up your definition a bit!
Single engine, Twin, jet, Day,Night etc
The single engine type has to be for me the Spitfire/Seafire/Seafang/Spiteful series.
Twins. Beaufighter (versitile too) Mossie, Ju88 (just to show I'm not biased.)
Now that should stir the pot a bit.
Dai
PS I'll put in the Wirraway because it was there when needed. Shot down a Zero too!

I'll have to go with the lightning as well....the early versions had there problems...but they got them all sorted out and they went on to be an excellent Aircraft.

On the other side of things I would have to say the Me262

I don't know what categories of comparison are being used to determine what is the "best" in this competion, I can only comment on what I believe to be the most versatile. My vote will go to the FW 190 series. Radial engine or inverted-V, short or long - winged, a beautifully clean design in all respects. And it looks mean.

Well, there was ONE occasion when a B-17 went into a "dogfight" with some twin-engined nazi plane tailing it home (feeding info to the AAA guys) and shot it down. does this count? (yes, i'm biased! Big Smile [:D]) I dunno about Der Gabelschwanz Teufel (fork tailed devil)... it had serious problems comming out of a dive (although it did get the admiral who planned the attack on pearl harbor (can't remember his name)... I would have to say it was the P-47. it "helped" get the bomber boys into occupied europe (even though it couldn't last very long), it was a very good close air support aircraft and it could take a LOT of punishment...

oh, and what TV series would that be, allan?

hi guys,
surely in terms of performance it has to be me262, fw 190 (long nose), and then p-51d...
i'm not a pilot but if i had to go into battle (god forbid), it would be in that order.
thank goodness the germans never got to make that many of those 262s!!!
Kind regards, Nicholas
