Testors F-4 kit
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 24, 2003 8:16 PM
Good evening.
Has anyone out there built the 1:48 Testor's F-4 Phantom kit? I believe the box states that it has parts for an F or G model...Anyway, I am thinking of an F-4G Wild Weasel for my next project and wondered if anyone had comments regarding the kit (fit, detail, etc.)

Also, if anyone knows of color photos and decals for Air Force Weasels in Dessert Storm I would be grateful; I only have two color pics and no close-ups...

Thanks; Jason

First go with aftermarket cockpit detail kits. The rear cockpit instrument panels are incorrect. The seats are unlike anything ever used in the F-4. The nose gear is all wrong as well as the main gear wheels. The Side Looking receivers on the nose housing the APR 38 ECM gear are missing. Sub an F-15 600 gal tank to put on the centerline. Wild Weasels used in desert storm were from the 37 th TFW out of George AFB California, with tail codes WW and 52 TFW, Spangdahlm AB Germany With tail codes SP.

The colors used were FS 36270 and FS 36118.

Hasagawa makes an excellent F-4G kit in 1/48 scale that is a much better kit. The Testors kit can be built into a nice F-4E but is not a good basics for the "G".

I built a 1/72 F-4G Wild Weasel(I think it was a Hasegawa kit) and was having trouble finding photos too. There aren't many photos of the Desert Storm F-4G. Close-ups are even harder to find.

Here's one taken during Desert Storm:

Here's an F-4G with the Desrt Storm paint:

I found some good close-ups here:

Here's a web page with about 60 F-4 photos that has about 8 F-4G's:

hi,i built the italeri 1/48 f4,but it was a testors rebranded under a different name,
anyway,i used a lot of filler aruond the intakes, wing seam & rear body.the nose needed major surgery to get it it fit.the air scoops on nose sides were missalighned, the gun pod was warped & the cockpit is basic to say the least,oh & the seats are wrong.(look at "martin-baker.com"to see which seat goes where,
