WW2 RAF leading edges
Posted by echolmberg on Monday, December 1, 2003 12:37 PM
Hi everyone!

I have always wondered: What was the purpose of the yellow strip along the leading edges of RAF planes in WW2? Did they serve some sort of purpose such as recognition?

Thanks!

My understanding is that's what is was for - recognition. The japanese did it on some their aircraft as well.

It was recognition purposes as the Luftwaffe & RAF camo schemes appeared very simialr at a distance, and even some experienced pilots ended flying in formation with the wrong airforces planes!

Obviously didn't work too well!
