From WWII it has to be the Lancaster. It was an elegant design, did it's job and had four Merlin engines. 'Nuff said!

As for today, my vote goes to the GR.1/GR.4 Tornado. It is'nt stealthy like the F117A and it does'nt have the weapon load of the B-52-but it will go places others won't go,hard and fast.

Darren.

I like the B-24s and B-26s from WWII. The Liberators couldn't take the punishment a Fortress could but I just like the way the looked.

I like the 26 Mauraders because it was a hot machine for it's time. It had a colorfull history before being accepted by the USAAC but experienced crews loved it.

My favorite WWII era would be the B-17

And since we're throwing single seaters in here, I'd say the A1-H Skyraider too.

Next would come the B-58

And the B1 takes the cake. Stealth's ok, but give me speed anyday!Big Smile [:D]

OK this time I'll go for the Lancaster. Why? 10 tons of bomb load, great looks, a line of decendents that went on into the 80s and I flew in one many years ago. And before anyone asks best flying boat........Sunderland, flew in one of those too.
Best carrier aircraft.........The Sordfish, read up on what she did it will amaze you!!

Lancaster, B-26, B-29(no leathers and wool needed) B-1, B-52!! Tu-22 Backfire, and Tu-160 Blackjack. Honorable mentions, the A-20 Havoc and the A-26 Invader, a hot rod. How about some of those drawing board german jets...and of course the Thunderchief!

Well, in response to everyone's opinion.....YOU ARE ALL DEAD WRONG!!!!!Wink [;)] The Lancaster beats em all!!! why else do you think my user name is Lancaster_lover? let's face it, the B-17 had a lousy bomb load. RAF Mossies could carry more than the "Flying Fortress"!!!Wink [;)] Good defensive fire power, great speed, AND it carried the 22,000 pound Grand Slam bomb. It would be impossible for a B-17 to carry such a munition.

I know it never dropped a bomb in anger (if at all) but for me its the TSR2. one awsomely capable aircraft that was assasinated by dumb ****** money grabbing backhander taking politicians who don't know jack s**t about what their airforce really needs.(the same the whole world over!!!!) Anything give you the idea that i dont like/trust/belive politicians?.too right i don't. sorry for ranting....Gregers

I,m affraid I will have to choose 2, one American and one British. In the USA's corner we have the B-17F ( I always think the chin turret spoit the planes lines somewhat), and in the British corner the LancasterApprove [^]

Favorite is the Fort. But, a sleeper 2nd is the B32 Dominator for WW2. Post WW2, the BUFF rides high, but I vote for the truly graceful bird, the B47 Stratojet. Takes one's breath away.

How about a vote for the B-2? I saw it up close for the first time on New Year's Day. It was on its way to a flyover of the Rose Bowl football game and it flew right over my friend's house at a very low altitude, followed by a pair of F-117's. That is a menacing-looking airplane! And you don't hear anything from the plane as it approaches except for a very quiet sssshhhhh...Only after it was past did it finally make the racket you normally would expect from a jet. I later heard from another friend that he saw it pass over his parents' house. Scared his kids half to death! :)

"Whaddya mean 'Who's flying the plane?!' Nobody's flying the plane!"

................yes folks im talking about the Mosquito!

That wooden wonder of a kite, its got to be my favorite bomber although its probabley more of a fighter/bomber.

good looks, outstanding performance, for the era, versetile and very very sexy!Cool [8D]

WWII: B-17G Flying Fortress
Modern: B-2 and B-52

These 3 planes changed the history of aviation. There is not much debating that. I have to agree with steelblue that a ride in one would definitely be awesome.

My vote goes to the "B-40". Wink [;)] That's what the P-40 was referred to as in the CBI/PTO because of it's pressed service as a mud mover.

If I had to pick a favorite "real" bomber, though, it'd be the He 177 Greif. No particular reason other than I just like the way it looks.
