Correct RLM colors for a Bv 141?
Posted by stinger on Thursday, December 4, 2003 5:11 PM
Hey gang - I'm building an Airfix Bv 141 and the instructions give no reference to RLM colors. Does anyone out there have any reference sources, or just happen to know what is correct? Would like to know for both the upper and undersides of the a/c.

Thanks in advanceSmile [:)]

The topside camo was RLM 70 & 71 over 65. Many were used on the Eastern Front (against Russia), and the theater colors (under wingtips, fuselage band) for that region were RLM 04.

Thanks Pix - I thought that might be right as I just did a Do17z in those same colors, but wasn't sure if they applied to other a/c.
Also, I have the old Profile Series publication for the Dornier, and the color representation within doesn't look anywhere near the 70 and 71 colors. I'm using AirCraft Colors paint (the old AeroMaster formulas). Any advice about this?

Oh yeah, one more question, since you know your German stuff, and if you don't mind. I'm also doing another Do17z in the White over Light Blue Russian front scheme. Again, my Profile book shows a greenish splotchy pattern over the white upper base coat. What color green do you think that would be, and should it be on the upper wings as well as the fuse? The book doesn't show a top view.

That's a great looking Schwalb, by the way. What are those colors?

Thanks again

You have to be careful about sources for matching colors. You are using paint, the publication uses ink, your computer monitor uses RGB (red, green & blue), and a computer printer uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). These are all different media, with very different properties.

The old Aeromaster paints, in my opinion, are great. Both enamel & acrylic colors lay evenly on the model's surface.

For Luftwaffe winter camo, I go the more difficult route. I paint the underlying camo colors first, then overcoat with white. The RLM 70/71 would be in the standard splinter scheme. I spray less white on leading edges & places where it will wear more. I also try to get an uneven coat over the entire top. To my eyes, it looks more convincing than spraying the camo colors over the white.

Thanks ! The 262 is painted in RLM 81/82 over 76. I used Model Master enamels.

Hope this helps.

Pix.
The white over darker camo is an interesting idea. I'll test both out on a scrap first. I have found that Floquil reefer white has excellent coverage abilities (and makes a great primer also). Do you think that would be an appropriate white to use? Also, which green should I use as the base color for that white/green winter scheme? I have a set of Eagle Strike decals that show just an overall white with 65 underside, but no green splotchy on the white topside. My Profile book shows a rather rich looking green splotchy, which I think looks good against the white, compared to something like a 70 or 71. I think an all white top is boring.

Do you know of a good book or site for German camo colors? I have several German WW2 projects waiting to hit the assembly line. Maybe I should make that a separate post question to get more hits and answers (not to say that you wouldn't know though Wink [;)]

Thanks again,
