Thanks for all the information guys.  I ordered the Big Ed kit directly from Eduards.  Looks like a ton of PE.  I have used PE in the past and love the outcome, but this is a new level of detail for a 1/48 scale.  Can't wait for it to arrive.  Gigatron....Nice build.  The detail is outstanding.

Thanks, Randy.  Not in any GBs with this one, just doing it on my own.

Here's a link to a thread I started on the build.  It has some more WIP pictures.  Hasn't been updated in a while because the wings are taking so long to build and it's been way too cold to paint, even though my booth is indoors.

I'm building the B-17G as well and I am using the Eduard PEs but since the Big ED set is rather expensive, I buy the sets one at a time. They come in separate sets and since I am not in a hurry building it, the sets I order come just at the right time. I order my Eduard PEs from hobby shops and they come rather fast. But PEs are habit forming. Once you finish a kit with PEs you don't want to build another without the photo etch. It does add a lot to the details.

I have the Big Ed set for the B-17G - it is a LOT of PE.  Plus there's a lot of going back and forth between sections as some kits contain parts for multiple sections.  And then there's considerations for the order in which things get done - build, paint, add PE/ add PE, paint, build/ paint, build, add PE/ etc..  The kit only took a week to arrive from Eduard's, directly.

I've been working on my big bird since the end of november and she's less than halfway finished.  There's just so much detail, especially if you choose to drop the flaps.  It's taking me 3 weeks, so far, just trying to add the detail in one flap.

Here's a virtual walkthrough of the fuselage of my B-17G.  This is a combination of Eduard's PE and a lot of scratchbuilding.

I'm abig fan of Eduard's PE stuff- it really adds a on of wonderful- and fun- detail to your models.  In addition to the fine vendors suggested so far, I'd suggest Sprue Brothers- fast as lightning and competitively priced.

As far as working with PE, you'll need to do some pretty neat folding.   Some folks get by with smooth-jawed pliers or a straight edge and a single-edged razor blade, or use a special foding tool.  I've got an Etch-Mate from mission models and use it all the time.

As far as demonstrations, poke a round on the web a bt and you'll find plenty.  I wrote a bit about it with captoned photos in my Helldiver thread here:  /forums/1/833910/ShowPost.aspx#833910

Hope this helps- I hope you try it- it's a lotta fun.

Cheers!

For panels and such they are the best.  The True details resin sets (available from Squadron) have a much better 3-D effect for interior panels etc.  I'm in the middle of building one using both the Big-ED and the True Details sets.  They overlap a little but not as much as you might think.  I'd get all of them if you want a bang up job.  Since you're willing to drop the coin for the big ED sets the small additional cost of the True Details sets will be well worth it.

The Eduards PE sets are probably the best available, generally.  Sets from other makers might be better depending on the kit they're for.  I start every build with Eduards PE, at a minimum, they're worth it.  I just bought the BigEd set for an F6F-3 and can't wait to start it.

I too recommend trying Great Models, Squadron or Roll Models before buying from the Eduards site.  The other sites are usually cheaper.

If you've never used photo etch before, I'd recommend holding off on going "whole hog" on a B-17. Try getting an Eduard ZOOM set for a smaller, single engine kit. That way, you can see if you even like P.E. And you have no regrets about dropping a lot of scratch on the Big ED set and not being able to do it justice!

Eduard's stuff is pretty good. You get lots of fiddly bits, and fairly good instructions. I'd avoid dealing direct, as they're in the Czech Republic, but their products can be found at almost any online or real hobby store!

Intrested as well since I have a G in the closet.

I do have their PBY parts and seam easy enough to use, but it is also my first time using PE so I have nothing to compare it to.

Took a couple weeks to get to me ordering it directly from Eduards since Squadron was out of stock.

I live in Ca.
