Aircraft diorama
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 11:10 AM
I wish to make a diorama to place a 1/48 Hatmann's bf-109 that i'm about to build. I have seen a few dioramas, where the aircraft is on top of a wooden platform made of several individual "boards" (you must know by now what i'm talking about). And my doubt is if in Russia (where Hartmann flew that aircraft), that was, in fact ever used, and what type of terrain could it be. If there was any grass, more dirt or muddy.
Thanks everyone!Smile [:)]

Hi:
I have a friend who's uncle was in the SS with the Panzer tanks on the Russian front. He said that when there wasn't any snow, there was grass and lots of it. THen there were areas that had lot's of mud, which was during the spring, when the snow was melting. What season are going for?I too will eventauly build a model of Gunther Rall's 109 flying over head of one of his russian victories. Rall is my favorite ace. I'm going to write him asking if he can tell me of any times that this happened, what they aircraft was, and if he can remember any markings. sorry for this. hope this helps

Like 7474 stated, what season do you want to represent?? Also check out the "In Action" books that pertain to the Bf 109. There is a Prt 1 and 2. There are other books that have good ref's to the 109 but I cant think of the publishers right now(past my bedtime LOL).
I did a P-51 from the 357th FG give or take mid fall. I did what you want to do. It does take time but the end result is AWESOME. O yeah the ship turned out great too.
Like I said just check w/ ref's and you cant really go wrong. Flaps up, Mike

If you would listen to everybody about the inaccuracies, most of the kits on your shelf would not have been built Too Close For Guns, Switching To Finger

Yes, that´s right!! It depends on which part of the year you want to represent. At Winter there was definitely snow (lot of it), at summer a lot of high grass and the rest was just a big mud valley!!

I made a background strictly for the digital pix i take of all my models.
I used a sheet of foam board to start with, then attach 8XX10 or 11 sheets of gray sandpaper to represent the tarmac. For the sky, i bought a yard of sky blue material at walmart and attached it to a window frame between my family room and living room.
I use cotton balls in various shapes for clouds, and on some of them, just a hint of gray primer spray. i also got several trees from a model shop's model train section.
I just recently bought a "carrier deck" section for a diorama base, that i will use for the Navy aircraft i have built.

Check your references but also remember that not everything was photographed. Just 'cuz you don't see it in a photo doesn't mean that it never existed.

The use of wooden planks was a common practice, but I suspect that this was subject to the availability of said planks and/or the raw materials to make them. As regards to the terrain, to reiterate what's been said, it depends upon the time of year and the locale. The Russian Front was a BIG piece of real estate and there were many types of soil and vegetation present in different areas. Also, often times Luftwaffe units were forced to move to different airfields on a sometimes daily basis. So the groundwork is really up to you.

My advice is this: If you'd like to use the planks, use them. If you want to put in alotta grass, go for it. And if you want to add snow, don't ask me to shovel it! Tongue [:P] (I hail from Buffalo, NY and snow is a sore subject!)

http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/

Than go to gallery

than go to Stuka

one of the gallery's has a nice spread on a Stuka built by Ray Snazel on the base I mentioned. Looks nice.

This is the best site I could find in the internet about the Bf-109:

Thousands of reference photos. Simply terrific!
Hope it helps you.
