How do you keep your Models Dust Free and looking new?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 8, 2003 7:21 AM
Hi all,

I'm curious to know how many of you display your plane models to keep them "dust" free and looking like new, etc. Is it best to just dust them from time to time or display them in a clear acrylic case. Your thoughts and ideas are most appreciated. I'm just about finishing up a B-17 with a large wingspan, so I guess I would need to get a custom built case (probably expensive), unless there is another way to keep them in good condition.

Clear acryl cases would be the best options, however I do not have the space nor resources to have them custom made to fit what I build. I have a 'general' display case, glass and wood, that keep a few models at a time. The rest is packed away in sealed boxes in the loft, awaiting their turn for the display case...

I've got one of the display cases that has held two of my models for at least ten years, and they are dust free. I suppose a display case with glass doors would also work. I'm thinking of getting or building something like that before my wife and I have kids. I'd like to keep little hands off my models. :D

Build what you like; like what you build.

Another good option would be to find an old china closet at a garage or tag sale in your area. I've been using one for several years to display models and they are as dust free and clean as the day they were completed. That's saying something considering that both my wife and I are smokers. Once your models accumulate dust or smoke residue, they will never look the same, no mater how carefully you clean them. Disapprove [V]

Good "saleing"

Once every few months I take them down one at a time and dust them. Then I glue on all the antennaes and canopies I break off :).

I use a few methods....A few are hung which means guess what no one sees the dust! Plus it adds that house weathering look that we forget to add after we wrap up the paint job!Wink [;)] Some are displayed in an actual display cabinet where my wife and I battle over space all the time.....Well that was then. I finally broke down and bought another identical piece just for her stuff....I seldome have to dust but when I do I use a can of air for cleaning computer keyboards and a very very soft brush.....

I hired a 1/48 scale maid.

Try dusting them with a big soft brush and finish with spraying just air with your airbrush. It will remove all dust.I've just done that with my F-104 ''Mountain Olympos'' 1/48 and it looks bright new!!

good luck
