1/72 Roden An-12
Posted by Wesker67 on Thursday, May 14, 2009 7:48 PM
Cool [8D]Hello, I am returning to modeling after a 10 year hiatus, and I have a question I am building a 1/72 Roden AN-12. The instructions call for painting the propeller blades flat black, but from what I have seen of most  pictures of this aircraft the propeller blades are painted some blue color what color is this?  I have looked, and looked on the internet but I cannot find any information. Who makes this color, does anybody know, any help would be appreciated.

Really, blue? I did mine in black and thought they matched more current i.e. airliners.net shots. It is hard to find pics of Cubs from the Cold War.

That is an alltime great model. I spent a long time building it, but it is super accurate and really interesting. Roden is Ukraine, so I wouldn't discount their inst. on this a/c as opposed to say Trumpeter who mess it up every time on everything. I used Humbrol colors as per the inst. for all the colors and they looked right.

Your right, when I went to Airliners.net  some of the AN-12 propellers where painted blue, and some where painted black. I would still like to paint mine blue just because I like the color. I also love this kit, and  I have purchased two more it has great detail, and the amount of color schemes are fantastic. I plan to build a colorful cargo version as soon as I finish this one.

Don't forget that ACE a Ukranian model company which produces 1/72 scale armor also produces a 1/72 scale AN-12 PE upgrade set. I picked one up and it looks awesome with replacement crew seats all in PE a cargobay crane and alot of misc bits and pieces including propeller deicers. I got mine on Ebay seeing as there is no noticeable US distributer.

Oh and I have the AN-12BK Civil and the AN-12BK CUB  And I recently got a hold of the Aero Master AN-12 decal set.

I did a lot of research on the AN-12 Cub and all my information indicates that for the military versions the propellers were painted black with yellow tips and small sections of metal deicer edges on the inner leading edge of each blade. I produced a softcovered book that includes 17 pages on the AN-12. Theere is a complete B&W set of walk around pictures and 19 researched profiles. If you are interested in the book drop me a line at matsman@cox.net

I bought AM decals- the kits' were crud. Also used Humbrol paints per Rodens inst, which I have to say set up the interior exactly like that photo, but it's a modern Ukrainian cargo civil bird, not Soviet. But I liked it. The little gas bowser was a separate kit from Zv with about a million parts, really fun to build.

Good thing there are 1/72 scale modern vehicles since you can put them into 1/72 scale modern cargo planes. You got to admit though that this plane just screams look at me I look like a American C-130.Tongue [:P]
