F-15 Burners
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 11, 2003 7:04 PM
just thought I'd pass this along. I posted earlier that I messed up my afterburners for my 1/72 scale F-15E. I found a solution. I was unhappy with the actuator rods. Well, I had just broken the A string on my handy dandy les paul so I took off the G string and cut it up to use as the rods. Here's a pic of the result. I was a bit hasty so it's not the best I can do but maybe on the next one now that I know what to do.

Here's a quick test fit. Not too shabby for first try and 1/72.

Nice work there plum1030.

You have a Les Paul huh? Very nice guitars!
I had a Fender Strat and sold it and bought a Gibson SG when I was in a band in my younger days. I miss the Strat and want to someday buy a SRV model. Big Smile [:D]

Aren't the inside of the cans supposed to be white like this?

I may do the white later. This one was a testbed for me. And I'm not that much of a stickler for accuracy unless it's my F-14, or my Corsair. I'm doing this particular F-15 because it kept me from burning my skin off at a recent airshow.

Here's the cans of the actual plane I'm doing. Not white anymore.

The "cans" look great. Only I think what you refer to as actuator rods are actually support struts that keep the ends of the exhaust "flying in formation". All the rods and levers at the base are what actually make the cans open and constrict. Any Eagle Fixers out there that can keep us "straight"? Also I have seen different patterns of white and dark gray streaks on the insides, not necessarily all white. Keep up the good work! Maybe I'll get around to finishing my 1/48 Eagle with the scratch built "featherless" AB cans. Only 162 parts per can! More than the rest of the model!

Hey plum,
Sweet job my friend on those burner cans. I have also used a light Ivory colour (w/ some weathering)for the inside of the cans on my F-16 as well as on my Strike Eagle.
I have a few ref pix that show a lighter shade inside as well. What I have heard from a few of my friends who are wrenchers, the newwer engines burn a lot cleaner so they really dont look as grimmy. But then again each engine will differ from one other on how they burn(also includes up keep).
Flaps up, Mike

I'll use this technique again on an F-15C I have. Now that I have it down, the inside of the cans won't look so bad next time around. Just as an aside, I can't say enough about the two bobs decals I used on this one. Glad they still respect 1/72.
