Golden Age Aircraft

Good news for Golden Age AC fans. Just picked up the new 1/48 Curtiss A-8 Shrike kit by Czech Model. Haven't started it yet but it looks good in the box, much better scribing than some of their kits. Certainly not Tamiya/Hasegawa quality but it should build into a very good looking, unique model. This era is really under-represented in the kit catalogs and gives a change to all of the Stangs, Spits and Emils. I for one would love to see more releases of AC from this era. Now give me a 1/48 Matrin B-10B!

I'm not a fanatic for Golden Age aircraft - but there is one that I would like to build - I've looked for Amelia E's Lockheed Electra and I was surprised at how long it took me to find one. The only one I could find was a kit by Williams Brothers - and their aren't many local hobby places that carry this brand.

I'm surprised that some more mainstream mfg hasn't picked up on it - but I guess that's the niche that a company like WB fills. It's a great thing that they do.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who would like to see more quality kits of the "Golden Age" aircraft. The model 10 Electra was used by all of the U. S. military services during WWII as a utility aircraft and coastal patrol aircraft by the Navy and Coast Guard. You would think that would rate a kit by the main stream manufacurers?

The Lockheed Vega set many aviation records in the hands of Wiley Post and Amelia Earhart, but all we have available is the old (very old) Lindberg kit. And what about a decent model of the Spirit of St. Louis?

I would like to see 1/48th AND 1/32 scale models of all of these aircraft. It is as if nothing had happened in aviation from the end of WWI and the beginning of WWII. The Acadamy release of the Bell XF-5-X 1Skyrocket was a good start, maybe someone will take the hint? rangerj

The Golden Age of aviation was great. The developments that took place in aeronautic science that translated into changes in the way designers thought about what they were puting in the air made it a tremendously significant time in aviation. It should be given more respect by the model manufacturers.

Personally, I think a 1/48 or 1/32 DeHavilland Dragon Rapide would be great.

A new Stinson Reliant kit would be good too.

A trully historically significant aircraft that I think has been overlooked for too long in kit form is the Dornier Wal. The type played a significant role in navigating routes over both the North and South Poles for the first time.

When you ride on an airliner and realise that the routes they take to get you from here to there were established in the Golden Age of aviation by folks who had no less daring and zest for adventure than other great explorers like Henry Hudson, Lewis and Clark, Christopher Columbus... and took very similar risks in opening up new ground in how we get around this world of ours; why, when there are kits of Columbus's ships available, are there not kits of some of the great aircraft of airborne explorers?

I say an emphatic "Yes!" to a 1/48 Vickers Vimy representing the transatlantic flight of Alcock and Browne.

"Yes!" to a decent 1/48 or 1/32 Spirit of St. Louis kit.
