I always keep a package of small cotton balls handy. They are absolutely ideal for protecting a cockpit or other large openings from paint. You can poke it into small places with a paint brush handle. It usually comes out without trouble, but if you need to, it can be moistened with water. I've never had a problem with cotton lint either.

I've found two methods that work for me:

1. cut up some tissue or paper towel into small pieces and then just tuck them all in until they cover everything up. You may need to use a knife or something to tuck the edges in.
2. Use some of the make-up sponges that many people use for decalling. Cut it to approximate size and then just squeeze it into place. It will expand to the edges and fill the cockpit. You may need some small pieces of tape to cover up the edges.

Good luck!

Depends, what are you doing now? Depending on the style of cockpit I may cover it with masking tape or stuff it with tissue or seal it with blue tack. Sometimes I may mask the canopy and tack it in the closed position then open after painting.

When you all have assembled the fuselage and are preparing to paint the primer of the primary colors, how do you mask the opening of the cockpit? I need to figure an easier way than the way I am currently doing it.
