???Islander kit
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 20, 2003 10:24 PM
Hi, am trying to find a kit, preferably 1/72, of the B/N Islander. This was the 1960's design ,fixed gear, 9 seat, piston powered twin built in Great Britain. Anyone ever built one or know of a kit on the market?

Thanks;
Tim

Airfix had one I believe - remember an article in a magazine (English I think) on converting it to a Trilander (third engine on vertical fin) - I would check with someone who specilizes in old kits and keep an eye on Ebay - just about anything shows up there sooner or later.

Airfix released this kit in the late seventies and had the opportunity of building one for a friend. This was in the markings of a Philippine Navy B/N Defender. Unfortunately, when I was going to get one for myself I couldn't find one anymore. I wonder if this kit is still available.

It's currently deleted. The one thing that's preventing Airfix from re-issuing it is the fact that they've misplaced the tool for the transparencies.
Pity really, since, from memory it was a very easy build

You will almost certainly get one from www.kingkit.co.uk

Thanks for your answers/inputs. Sounds like the Islander kit has become very scarce. I get a case of the "spooked" when thinking of buying through e-bay. however if I'm serious about the model maybe only avenue open.

Hi Tim, i just checked on the kingkit site and they do indead have one, i have dealt with this company before and you won't have any worries dealing with them. the only other option is to find a site that encourages trading and place a wanted add there.(check the links below)
hope this helps. Greg

I have 4 of the kits stored for small airforce markings (Jamaica, Mauratanea, etc). I have both the original Islander and the later Defender kits.
I may be persuaded to part with one. Either contact me at my email or leave a reply here.

Philp, If Snowshoe isn't interested in that kit i am (either islander or defender), if you still want to sell one please could you e-mail me as regards price, shipping ect.or we could trade if i have something that you want, let me know what sort of stuff you are interested in. cheers. Greg

Tim, Greg,
I found 3 of my kits. One is the original issue Islander and the other 2 are the Defender version (can be made either way). My other kit is also a Defender (if I can figure out which box it got stashed in). The Defender has a 1976 date on it and the Islander has no date but was before then.
Greg, do you think if Airfix got a copy they could reengineer the glass and reissue it? My collection needs about 16 of these for all of those small countries that don't seem to fly anything else. However, I do need a MPM Fokker G 1 and that new Special Hobby Pucara so, contact me offline and let's see if we can work a deal.

thanks for your replys. Looks like it might be easier to find a 1/1 scale Islander than a copy of a kit.

Just did an eBay search and found this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3167731475&category=1189

I've bought a lot of stuff from eBay and have yet to be burned. This seller looks to have a good rating also.

Humber Airways used to operate two Islanders, and had a quantity of transfers made to fit the Airfix kit. Unfortunately this was some years ago and I would be surprised if any still survive, but.........

In the queue: 1/48 Beech Staggerwing (RAAF), P38 (RAAF), Vultee Vengeance (RAAF), Spitfire Vb (Malta), Spitfire VIII x2 (RAAF), P39 x2 (RAAF), Martin Baltimore (Malta?), Martin Maryland (Malta), Typhoon NF1b, Hellcat x2 (FAA)
