Oil Wash
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, March 1, 2003 7:17 PM
Hi everyone, I have a question about oil washes. The base paint is Model Master, and I am using Windsor&Newton oils for a thin dark wash. My question is: what is the best thinner to remove the excess? I tried their "English Distilled Turpentine", but it took the paint off. I also tried some turpentine from Lowe's, but if I am not careful, it takes the paint off too.

What has worked for you?

Turps works for me, but you must leave the base coat to cure thouroughtly, for about a week. Spraying a coat of Future (Johnsons Kleer) over your base coat before the wash will help too. You shouldn't be applying the wash so thickly that you need to remove too much excess, as aircraft are not tanks, and only need subtle weathering.

I don't know why I didn't think of protecting the paint somehow with a clear, like Future. That is probably just what I need.

Thanks!
