I have to ask-- are you delving into aircraft now?? I am putting the finishing touches on the P-51C that I am building for a Tuskegee Airman that lives in my town. Let me know if you need anything else-- and if you have specific questions, I can ask him for you-- please post here as I'll be talking to him again next week. He was in the 99th Fighter Squadron that was based in Italy. This was a great project and I learned a lot from doing it... and got some great stories from him.

What scale are you building?? Not sure if you are doing 1/72 or not, BUT if you are doing 1/48 scale, I have some decals from the Tuskegee Airmen in Italy set (I think it was Two Bobs??) left over that I didn't use which will probably just go to waste otherwise....

i have a couple of questions :
1) which guys played with the Ellington band ?
2) what were the names of their planes ?
actually, i'd appreciate as many plane names & nose art as possible !
my 'stang will most likely b in 1/72 ( i think academy has just released a Tuskeegee Airmen P-51 in that scale... what a Christmas present it was 4 me when i saw that ! ) haven't decided on the b-17 yet, but if anyone can suggest 1 in 1/144, that would probably b my best bet...
so i'll probably b asking about that next, unless someone gets up with it from here !

I'll ask him those 2 questions when I see him next..... although his memory is sketchy at times just to forewarn you. Again-- if you can find the Osprey book "Mustang Aces of the 9th and 15th Air Forces and the RAF", they have 2-3 pages of color schemes for 6 different planes...they are:

"Topper III" flown by Capt Ed Toppins of the 99th
"Bunnie" flown by Roscoe Brown of the 100th
"Miss-Pelt" flown by Clarence "Lucky" Lester of the 100th
"Creamer's Dream" flown by Charles White of the 301st
"INA the Macon Belle" flown by Lee 'Buddy' Archer of the 302nd
"Little Freddie" flown by Freddie Hutchins of the 302nd

There's also a B&W photo in the book of "Skipper's Darlin'" flown by Jug Turner.

In addition, I know the website at www.HistoricAviation.com has a pretty good selection of Tuskegee Airmen books if you'd like to read up on them.....or just ask me as I have read 3-4 books prepping myself for the project I just finished up. My wife got me 2 great DVDs on the Airmen as well so I am quite content at present

I was fortunate enough to see some of the filming of the HBO movie, "The Tuskegee Airmen".
They shot a lot of the dirt strip, T-6 and P-51, scenes here at Fort Chaffee just outside of Fort Smith, AR and at Fort Gibson in Oklahoma.
The airplanes that were used were kept at the Fort Smith Airport for about a month while they were filming.
Also, the car that Mrs. Roosevelt was driven to the base in, is owned by a family in Fort Smith. The production company repainted it and then painted it back for the owners.
