F-82 Twin Mustang
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 26, 2003 12:51 PM
Hi all,
I was just wondering if there is now (or has ever been) a kit out for a 1/48th scale F-82? Ive seen afew 1/72nd scale and I imagine that a 1/48 scale would be pretty large, but I think it would be cool to build.
Thanks for any info in advance Smile [:)]

I don't think it was Hobby Craft, but another company with a similar name. The kits would require a lot of work to make them "good". Squadon had put out some new vacuform canopies for them. A buddy of mine bought one and I decided to pass! A good 1/48 has got to come along one day!

Clear Left!

I believe the 1/48 kit's manufacturer's name was Model Craft. I remember reading an unflattering review in FSM a few years back. It said that the detail parts were chunky, and alignment of the horizontal stab was made even more difficult by being a butt-joint. I remember that the markings were questionable as well, the one I remember was a decal placement of a fuel fill filler cap on the vertical stab !
If you enjoy the challenge of limited-run kits, you may be able to finish it. Its probably along the lines of MPM or Hi-PM, without the resin or photo etch.

hi kullgan, there is only one model of F82 i1/48 made by modelcraft ,it is f82e 48 021,and f82g/w/radar/ 48 022,U can look for Eduard brass 48190 and vac-form canopies from Squadron 9585/the canopies that comes with model are difficult to fit, generally the model requiers lot of work, haven't tried the decals yet.for reference look for Squadron"mini"in action #1608 and magazines:Wings and Airpower. Enjoy,Invader

Hi Kullgan,

in 1/48 scale the only model available is the one from Hobbycraft.I finished mine about three years ago. But I think that I must warn you . The fit of the kit is terrible you must use liberal amounts of putty and spen hours upon hours sanding and shaping and scratchbuilding parts in order to get a decent model . i must admit there wher times I wanted to throw it in a corner but in the end I finished it and I must say that it looks good on the shelf along with the other mustang models.

If you need any help let me know

cheers

Thanks for all the info Smile [:)],
I guess this is just one aircraft that I should wait on and see if a better kit comes out in the next few years. Good thing my shelves are full of stuff to build in the mean time Tongue [:P]

Modelcraft is the only manufacturer of a 1/48 Twin Mustang.

I would say what you've been told about it in the above postings would be accurate to any Modelcraft offering. Very rough in spots and not for the beginer.

I'd also say get some aftermarket decals if you go after this kit, The Modelcraft kits I've built have no problems with the adhesive qualities of the decals, but they do have the strange tendancy to stretch out of shape when you try to remove them from the paper, no matter how long you had them in the water.

Lastly, customer service is not a priority with Modelcraft. If you find a part missing or damaged, be prepared to find aftermarket or make scratchbuilt replacements. You'll be very lucky if Modelcraft replies to you at all for requests for replacement parts.

I have the Modelcraft kit partially build with about a pound of fill in the closet. I supose it all depends on your skill level and body work experience as to how the product will turn out.
From the work I've seen through the forum there are a lot of modelers out there who could turn the kit into a museum peice. I'm just not one of them. Sad [:(]

Hey Kullgan;
Well Modelcraft has the run of the 1/48 P/F-82's I've got 2 of them and they really need some work to produce a very nice plane, the trailing edges are to thick, the cockpit's floors need to be trimed to fit in the fuselages, I reall think that this company has stock in 3M for all the sandpaper I've been going through with these kits.
but after the hard work they make a nice addition to the collection
