Need help with a paint scheme for a P-47D
Posted by TryintoModel on Sunday, December 28, 2003 12:04 PM
This may sound silly because I will be doing a fictional plane anyway, so why should I need a reference or picture to go by, right? But anyway, was there a paint scheme with a camouflage top with an aluminum bottom for the P-47D "Bubbletop"? I can't seem to find much reference material on paint schemes on the internet. What I can find shows the bottom being a light gray or some almost white, but no bare aluminum. I wanted to be semi accurate so if there was never a scheme like that, I'll go ahead and paint the bottom grey. I realize that the markings won't be accurate unless I do the scheme from my box, but I really wanted to paint a cool camo scheme.

Does anyone know of a good sight with pictures of camo P-47s?

Take a look at my sig photo. This aircraft has a two-tone blue upper camouflage with bare metal undersurfaces. Many aircraft of the 56th Figter Group had similar patterns in use during the latter part of 1944.

HEY! That's exactly what I was looking for! But I didn't know your sig had a bare metal bottom. Do you know where I could find some more pictures of those planes? Particularly upper wing surface shot? I assume the canopy frame is bare metal also, right?

You can find color pics of this and other a/c in Jeff Ethell's book Fighter Command (also reprinted in large format paperback) as well as others of the 56th. The Aeromaster decal sheet for this aircraft has detailed profile paintings. http://www.eaglestrikeproductions.com/cgi-bin/amddecals.pl?scale=48&setid=015&dbs=aeromaster&pgs=2&currpg=1&dclimg=ad48015

Some of the assembly instructions for P-47 kits have the upper wing profile that you're looking for. I'll try to find one and send it to you offline. And yes, the canopy frame is natural metal on this particular a/c. Hope this helps.

Well, I would send it, but you don't have an email link in your profile. Contact me offline if you want the T-bolt profile. I located one that will suit your needs.
