A friend gave me this kit for free a number of years ago.  I built it to put on my youngest son's shelf.  The cockpit had already been started, so I just painted the inside of the canopy sky blue.  I used it to play with my airbrush and it was the first kit I fully masked to paint.  I enjoyed the build and am happy with the results.  I can't speak to accuracy, though.

I build 1/48 scale WW2 fighters.

Have fun.

Any thread that includes Berny is a treasure too.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Yep, I remember that kit as a kid and then tried another as I got older. Tough kit for sure. I don’t think I ever got past basic airframe on either one.

On the bench: Revell-USS Arizona; Airfix P-51D in 1/72

Always with the negative waves, Moriarty. Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?

I'm finishing up the Testors Banshee, which is a pig of a kit. But I'm building it gear up and hanging from the ceiling and it's gonna be beautiful up there, Baby....

‘Here I am, drinking wine and eating cheese, and catching some rays, you know?’

And then I see the above quote on FSM. Awesome.

Ok, so I know this thread is 8 years old, but I just saw it, and any thread that includes a Kelly’s Heroes quote is perfect, even it is on a Testors TOS thread.

Try the Hasegawa weapon sets there should be a Shrike and a Standard ARM in there. I'm talking about the 1/48 scale set not the 1/72 scale set.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

At the very least I should be able to find a home for the two triple ejector racks in the kit.. And a Shrike and ARM are hard to come by.. I might be able to use them on a future F-105G or (better) F-4G in the future if the kit comes from a certain Japanese manufacturer who hates putting ordnance in the kit.

The bombs and the Air to Air weapons look pretty toy-like.

Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?

Tell me about it.  I bought that kit when it was first released back in the early 80's.  Knowing a little about the F-4 Phantom, I almost threw the kit into the trash as soon as I opened it.  Nothing on the kit looks any thing like the real F-4G.  Their 1/48 scale RF-4C is just as bad.  Cockpit?  What cockpit.  Landing gear?  You have got to be kidding me.

I tried to mate the nose of the RF-4C to a Monogram F-4C/D and it was like trying to put a VW front end on a Caddy.  Super Angry

I'm envious as it seems every kit I do is a "skill builder".

While building error & bad fit laden kits gets so far up my nose that my brain hurts, it is very satisfying to turn something much nastier than a pigs ear into a purse of some sort.

Testors 1/48 F-4G.. kill me now!

A while back I picked up a Testors 1/48 F-4G. It was a steal at like $8.00 so I thought how bad can it be?

Long story short.. It's bad.

The weapons in the kit are lousy.. It includes a Shrike, Standard ARM, 6 750lb bombs (best guess), sparrows, something resembling early sidewinders, a poorly formed modern ECM pod, and tanks. It is a decent array of weapons, but most of them look just not right. I am going to build this one with nothing on it.. So I tossed it all in the spares box in case I need it for something later.. We never can tell with these things.

I decided.. OK, great I will build it as a skill builder, paint it, practice a few things, and then have it meet its end as a target on the range some day.

The cockpit detail is non-existent, the seats don't even resemble F-4 seats, so I painted the inside black except for the seat cushions and put it together. I guess if you really wanna practice scratch building a cockpit this is a great blank slate.

The fuselage is horrible. Nothing fits right, the kit comes with a short nose, and the G nose extension. The G nose extension fits poorly, and I think mine ended up crooked. The gaps are horrible and will be a putty party later.. Which is fine, I need to work on my gap hiding- and that is why the kit isn't in the trash.

It comes with Luftwaffe F-4F and USAF WW decals.. They look decent, but nothing to write home about.

To the kits credit, the intakes are some of the better fitting I have seen on an F-4 kit.. They probably will need less attention than the intakes on any F-4 I have built previously.. Like I am talking a few swipes with a sanding stick and we are done.

Also, there is a ton of flash on everything. I am guessing the molds for this kit are ancient. I know almost all Testors kits are from now-defunct companies.. they should have let this one go.

Unless you need frustration and problems, spend a few bucks and get a decent kit. It isn't like there is any shortage of F-4 kits on the market.

Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?
