panda f-35?
Posted by willuride on Friday, January 2, 2004 8:46 PM
does anybody know what kind of detail the panda models have on the f-35. i think i have found a good deal on three versions (don't really know) nato, marine, and navy. i am just wondering if it is worth my money to get them for the quality.

I've got the kit myself, still boxed up an awaiting attention. I'd say the detail was minimal, especially compared to Academy/Hase/Tam stuff. Just a few engraved panel lines, and "generic" wheel bay and cockpit detail.

However, the shape isn't bad, and with a good paint job it would make a decent model. There have been a few posts in the past on this forum about the same model, and someone posted pics of the one they completed. In spite of the shortcomings of the kit, it looked great. It would be worth looking for it.

IIRC, the main problems were very thick decals (I thought they were stickers until someone mentioned they weren't!) and the fan detailing was incorrect. There aren't any weapons either, and the bays are sealed, so it would need a bit of scavenging and scratchbuilding to add that kind of detail.

I think the guy I mentioned finished his with some left-over Marine AV-8 decals instead. I'm still considering giving mine the Royal Navy treatment. Wink [;)]. However, if you are a fan of the F-35, and the kit is going cheap, it's not a bad buy and would make a nice big plane - about 11"x9" in 1/48

I recently bought the USMC version of the Panda kit, and, at $16 US, I considered it acceptable for the price. As mentioned above, the detail was EXTREMELY minimal, but not bad for $16. I would recommend this company's kits for beginning modelers who want to start trying glue-together kits. There's not a lot of detail, they're low-cost, and easy to build. That way, if things don't go too well at first, you're not out a lot of money. Incidentally, I haven't built mine yet, either. I was impressed with the molding quality of the kit, and the canopy was in great shape, being individually bagged. I'll be building it in the very near future.
