Cockpit Photos Details
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 2, 2004 9:02 PM
Where do you go to get interiors? The Squadron "in action" series only has exteriors. I'm working on the McDonnell (before Douglas) F3H-2N,M Demon and trying to detail the cockpit from memory (40 years ago) is kinda hard. I know there is a display model at Pensacola, but that's on the other side of the country from me. I have several other models of the same era (Grumman F11F, Chance Vought (before LTV) F8U or F-8) that I would like to detail as well.

A former Demon Doctor, eh? Groovy! What were they like to work on?

Here's a couple cockpit images:

They're both rather poor quality, especially the second one, but you may find them useful. I do have one other shot but it's the cockpit of the bird at the museum in Pensacola and it's not complete or accurate, unfortunately.

I'm sorry I haven't got any more for 'ya. At least not at the moment!

The Detail & Scale series of reference books, by Bert Kinzey, would be a good place to look. Hopefully, he has a book on the Demon.

I forgot to mention, I just bought the Detail & Scale book for the Vought F8U Crusader (Book #31) today (3 Jan 2004), and it is excellent. Many, many great cockpit photos. Most hobby shops, including all HobbyTown USA's, carry Detail & Scale. Maybe you can find them online as well. Good Luck!!

As far as I know there's no D&S book on the Demon, but there is one by Steve Ginter (Ginter's! - how could I forget!?!) in the 'Naval Fighters' series.

If it's like any of the other books in that series, it should be an excellent general reference.

I've come to discover that the FSM enlargement on the second photo I posted above is not working, so I'll provide a direct link HERE. It's a rather large image and perhaps that's why it's not working? I dunno...

Wow, thanks to all for the responses, especially Blackwolfsqd. Yes, I worked on them about 40 some years ago. I was firecontrol and maintained the all weather radar/missile systems. It was really fun pulling the 100# receiver transmitter out of the nose bay on a pitching carrier deck! The "scope" was a real bitch to replace as we had to loosen the entire instrument panel which involved going under the panel headfirst. Something I could only have done when I was 18 and limber!

The photos bring back great memories, which is what got me started modeling in the first place.

Geez, replacing the scope sounds similar to installing a new stereo system in a '92 Sunbird! Tongue [:P]

Speaking of pitching decks, waddya think was going thru this Demon Driver's mind?

Glad I could help you out, just wish I had more for you. Good info on the Demon is usually hard to come by, unfortunately. Disapprove [V]

Anyhoo, thanks for sharing that tidbit. May I ask what unit(s) you were with?

Blackwolfsqd,

Thanks again for the memories! That is an aircraft from VF-21 launching in a heavy sea off the Midway (CVA-41), probably 1961 or 62. That white water is coming over a bow that stands over 50 feet above sealevel.

VF-21 continued to fly the F3H after my squadron (VF-114) switched to the F4H (F-4B) in 1961. I think they may have been the last squadron to fly that old pregnant guppy.

OOPS! Is my face red! That demon is one of ours! I sent the photo to a demon driver who pointed out that the tail sign (NH) is for VF-114, I thought it was strange that an aircraft with number 205 had our tail sign, because our birds were all 400's. That launch may have been on a carqual (carrier qualification) off the coast of California. That aircraft had probably just been transferred, or was in transition, from VF-121 to VF-114 and only the tail sign had been painted over. It would have to have been in early 1958 because we never sailed on Midway when I served (mid 1958-1961).
