A-10 Warthog
Posted by Gamera on Sunday, April 4, 2010 10:48 AM

This is HobbyBoss's A-10 Warthog. She's painted as one of the aircraft based at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base that were deployed in the Middle East in 1991. We used to go to Myrtle Beach back in the early - mid '80s and the A-10s were constantly flying over. Not sure why it took me twenty years to build one...

Pictured with an old Tamiya 1/48 Tiger. Wish I had some more modern hardware but I was surprised how much larger the A-10 is.

I'm thinking now that maybe I should take pictures of all of my models to spot the flaws. I didn't notice till now how the canopy framing doesn't seem to match the aircraft colour at all, and in the head-on view the right landing gear leg is completly kitty-cornered.... Sigh.... Embarrassed

Comments welcome as long as you're not too cruel... Confused

Looks good from here..

Digital pics can be a big help pointing out missed glitches.

Nice work on the classic HAWG.  I have noticed flaws in pictures of several of my models that I hadn't seen in the actual model.

Thanks gentlemen, you're too kind...

Jules: the kit went together great. The only real problem is that HobbyBoss molded the detail on the tops of the landing gear bays into the upper wing. That caused a sunken area in the upper wing surface. I wasn't really sure how to fix it without sanding off all the detail and replacing it so I left it as it was. It doesn't show too much to me under the camo paint but if you want to enter one in a contest it would have to be fixed.  Maybe I'm just an assembler but I've done plenty of limited run and garage kits and really didn't feel like killing myself here. To me it looks like a Warthog so I decided to let it slide.

It's been almost two years since I build her so I maybe forgeting some stuff but as I remember there weren't any other problems. Everything fit quite well. I sanded off two sensors on the tail that the aircraft didn't have back in the '80s - early '90s but other than using a Eduard ZOOM set of PE in the cockpit didn't change anything. I used aftermarket decals for the Myrtle Beach SC marking but applied the kit ones for the stencils and weapons and they worked great- much better than say... (cough, cough)...  Hasegawa decals.... Super Angry

As to weapons unless you cut open the nose and scratchbuild the interior you can't see any of the 30mm Avenger cannon but the muzzle which is odd since the kit comes a beautiful detailed cannon barrel, breech, ammo chutes, and the motor that spins the thing. So I left it out, filling the area where it fit with nose weights and just glued the muzzle to the front of the plane. I suppose you could build a stand and display the detailed gun next to the aircraft if you wanted to. You get enough ordinance to load her up and frankly I think you could load up two or three more aircraft with the spares!

If you haven't bought your Warthog yet check around. Normally the kit goes for about eighty bucks American which I think is way over-priced. I picked mine off Squadron during a half-price HobbyBoss sale. Once in a while they still mark the stuff down half-price if you can wait on it.

Thanks and please post yours when you get her done! Yes

Chris,

That wouldn't be RAF Bentwater markings would it? I was stationed there in the 80's so I would be interested if thats what you are shooting for!

Gamera thanks for the heads up, i have already bought the kit and over here in the UK it costs about £34 which equates to $52 which isn't to bad, not sure why they are so much more in the US! i also have the eduard ZOOM pe set of the cockpit and may also get the exterior kit as well. i also noticed the large amount of weapons and have already borrowed one of the ALQ-119's for a phantom build!! your build looks great and im hoping mine comes out half as good as yours! i'll be sure to post whens she's done but it wont be for a while yes as im knee deep in a RoG phantom at the moment and im a 1 build at a time kind of guy!!

IBuildOne48 she'll be a Bentwarters bird for sure as i live reasonably close and remember seeing them fly in and out of RAF Mildenhall when i was a kid!! the only problem im having at present is finding decals for the grey scheme, all i have found so far is sheets for the camo!

Great! Thirty-four pounds sounds alot more reasonable! The ZOOM set worked really well and I'm sure you'll enjoy using it. And thanks for reminding me - I need to finish my Phantom too! I wish I could do one model at a time, I always end up multi-tasking and end up distracted by my most recent thing- in this case the BoB GB...

i've used the pre-painted zoom set on a RoG 1/48th euro fighter and really liked the results which is why im using it on the A-10, im not a tidy builder so i cant build more than i kit at a time otherwise i would have mixed up bits all over the place!! not good!!

cheers, chris
