Anyone need pics from the USS Intrepid???
Posted by stinger on Monday, January 5, 2004 5:08 PM
Hey Gang!

I lucked out here on my latest work "mission" and will be working in downtown Manhattan for the next three weeks.
I definitely plan to visit the USS Intrepid museum Tongue [:P].

If anyone needs some pictures of aircraft in that museum, or a particular area of one, I would be happy to take them and email them to you.

Don't know exactly how close I can get to each of them, but I'll do my best to get you what you need.

Please specify the following:

The aircraft

The area of it you want to see (cockpits are probably out (unless FSM wants to give me a temporary 'PRESS' pass Big Smile [:D] ))

The format of the pic that you prefer (either .jpg or .bmp)

Please email any request to me via the forum or directly at stng955@cs.com

For a list of aircraft go here:
http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/exhibits_a-aircraft.html

You'll find a pull down menu of aircraft on display.

I'd like some pics of the A-7E Corsair II. Any gear detail shots and wheel well shots, and really, any shots you can get of it. I just picked up the Hasagawa 1/48 of it and plan to build it after I'm done with my spit.

I envy you your trip.

stinger if its not too much trouble... the F-16 they have there, could you get the rear exhaust area, primarily the "turkey feathers" and the area directly in front of the exhaust. I would prefer a jpg.
Thank you and enjoy your trip!

I went there a couple of years ago for the second time. It is a great museum I need some more photos of the Tomcat as I have that one from Hasegawa.

I bought the plane after I went there the second time. I was there many years before.

I have over a couple dozen slides of the planes on board but when I start driving I will have to get back to there and take some more photos.

Man, i LOVE the USS Intrepid! It's my favorite museum by far (Where else can you find an A-12 on an aircraft carrier deck?!?)... I know that you can get pretty close to the aircraft, for as long as you don't touch them... And the Growler is definetly worth a visit! It's only a 15-20 minute tour, but very cool none the less!

It's been quite a while since i was last there, so i dunno if there is an F-86F on display (the website says there isn't one)... probably not, but if there is one, some pics of the exhaust (i.e. up the tail pipe), down the intake, the cockpit, airbrakes/landing gear bay would be appreciated! Geez, i miss NY. Smile [:)]

It just occured to me that the modern-day intrepid would make for one interesting build with planes from different eras and squadrons occupying the flightdeck.... Smile [:)]

Ok have you four on my list with the details.

Madda - A7E - will get all that I can from what I know I would look for, including your gear and well shots. (We also have an ANG A-7 back in Denver. Don't know the model #. Will check when I get back.)

AJacket - Know what you mean about the "turkey feathers". In more detail, are you looking for some comparison on the metallic color variations or the mechanics involved? Will try to get both. When you say "front of exhaust", what are you looking for? Got you on the JPG.

Jmz66 - Hey Buddy, will get you a general "walkaround", but if you give me more specifics, I will try for those also. Get your license man, and get out here again!

shrikes - That's an A-12?? WOW! I only saw it again this morning from the Hudson Parkway and just assumed it was an SR-71. And I know, I LOVE NY CITY!! (My fourth time here in 3 yrs.)
Man, I knew I should have asked this when I was home in Denver. Wings Over The Rockies has an F-86 (don't know if it's an F model) that is undergoing a complete restoration, to the point where the fuselage was apart and the engine out. I have some shots down the throat and down the tailpipe from the midsection aft (since it was "broken" in half). I'll try to find that disk. In the meantime, will get you what I can from the Intrepid. (Wings Over The Rockies is looking for volunteers, maybe I should look into that also Smile [:)]).

I figure I'm here for at least three weeks (or so I'm told, and the project is looking that way), so I should have 2-3 weekends, or minimum of four chances to see the museum. I'll do everything I can to get you all what you need. (But this time I just have to get my chopper tour in. Tongue [:P])

For general knowledge here, I am using a Sony Mavica Digital, which gives excellent results, but I also have my Nikon 35mm film camera, which I can use for even better shots. I will use my best judgment about which to use where. Please keep in mind though that these shots will take a few weeks to arrive, as I just arrived in NY last night, but I will get them out ASAP.

PLEASE leave me your email addresses so I can get them out to you personally. Contact me at stng955@cs.com

Anyone else out there, jump in. I just love a good mission!Cool [8D]

Yep, it's an A-12! Though i don't think there are any outward differences to differentiate it from an SR-71 except for the fact that the A-12 was a single seater... Even though it said "Do not touch!" i still had to run my hand over a plane that once went mach 3... incredible!

Is the RA-5C a new addition? why is it i can't remember ever seeing such a beautiful plane?? Smile [:)]

If you get a chance, could you get me pictures of the Regulus One missile on the USS Growler. I need nose and tail section photos depicting the decaling. My e-mail is RSaddlemire@sc.rr.com.

Speaking of the intrepid, I remember making a model kit of it once when i was around 7 (can't remember the brand), and messing it up REAL bad (one of my first glue models...)... does any once know if they still make this kit? also, do they make one for the growler? Smile [:)]

You should get extra pics of the A-6F as I think it's the only one made. Also there is no F-86 but an FJ fury, very rare. Avoid pics of the Helldiver as it's a mock-up, not a real aircraft.

The fury is a nice looking plane too (they said that it was the basis for the USAF's F-86)... Also, i think plum1030 is correct in that the A-6F on display is the only one produced... It's a shame that they scrapped the Intruder airframes (i fell in love with the way they look because of the "flight of the intruder" book and movie). At least you still see it's cousin the EA-6B still in service. Smile [:)]

RSaddlemire - I just noticed that Regulus this evening on the way back to my hotel. Gotcha covered on that one, and thanks for the E-address.

Plum1030 - Thanks for the heads up on that info. I put it in my notes.

I think i have it... Are they going to add it to the collection? No way! where are they going to put something that big on deck? Well... they did put an A-12 there, but this is bigger... don't want to spoil the fun for everyone else, but am i on the right track? You like it better than the Gulfstream GV... right? Wink [;)]

AJacket

Ok.

For the best color reference obtainable, I'll shoot the pics on both digital and film media.

I'll get some overall shots of that area and some real closeups of the feathers/fuselage joint area. Is that ok?

Wish I were that pooch in front of the fire right now.

Stinger, I used all my film on the Cobras for two upcoming projects I'm working on, could ya get me a shot of the Concorde?

Thanks!

Cobra,

A PICTURE OF WHAT?

You just blew my little quiz, Dude - But the only answerer, and WINNER, is SHRIKES!

Good work on that shrikes (You either have a good memory, or good investigative skills Wink [;)] Cool [8D]) (How DID you do that, anyway?)

Anyway, Cobra,
You can bet that I'll be getting plenty of pics of the Concorde. I didn't even know it was here until I saw it from the Parkway yesterday. I did a triple take on it, as I have never seen one before in person. If I had read my Aviation Week issue in early December I would have known that it came to dock around Nov. 25th from it's last flight into JFK (I just happened to have that issue with me, and saw the article this morning Dunce [D)]). I have only seen it from a head-on view, but the AvWeek photo shows it in profile in the (obviously) latest BA livery. I hope they can keep it in good condition, being outdoors and right on the water like that.
I'd post the link to that photo, but you need to own a subscription to access it, and I'm a bit fearful of the copyright aspect of it.

Now that word is out, maybe some of the Concorde group build guys would need some pics also?

BTW Cobra - Do you live in or near the City?

Stinger,

My parents are in Westchester. I happen to be home on a 10 day vacation and I'm enjoying myself immensely. I head back to Texas on Monday.

Aeroswat,

I should have my pics of the AH-1J and AH-1S by next week. I'm going to get them on CD so I can email em. I've got full cockpit interior shots, plus a panel by panel outside view of both sides of the J. Some nice closeup of open panels on the S as well. Email me at Cobrahistorian@yahoo.com and I'll send em along to you.

I looked at the great white bird while I was there. It is absolutely beautiful. I'm hoping they'll be able to build something on the pier to house it in. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that keeping them outside in salt air is just asking it to corrode.

Then again, the Blackbird looks infinitely better now than it did when I worked at the Intrepid from 1991-94. I used to spend my lunch breaks re-securing panels that annoying visitors had opened and left hanging.
The coolest thing about the A-12 though is the fact that it is the FIRST production aircraft. The only Blackbird before it was the prototype.

As for the WWII aircraft, the Hellcat (in Vraciu's markings) is a mockup too. I had the task of cleaning the Hellcat one rainy day. It was rather amusing when I stood up in the gear well and poked my head up through the unsecured upper wing skin! The Avenger, however is a real TBM-3.

The RA-5C is one of the original aircraft the Intrepid opened with in 1982. I remember seeing it for my 8th birthday which was 3 weeks after the museum opened. I saw those angled intakes and fell in love! Now THAT was a time! I'm hoping they'll get around to repainting it some decade soon.

The FJ-5 Fury is REALLY nice. Its basically the Navy's version of the F-86H. The Navy adopted the Fury before the Air Force got the Sabre, but Sabre development overtook Navy interest and the Fury's development was basically an afterthought. Interesting though, that the original FJ-1 was basically just a P-51 with a jet engine in it!

I'm really hoping that I can get back to working at the Intrepid in the coming years. With a Masters in Museum Science and a PhD in military history, you'd think I'm kinda marketable in this field! LOL... oh well, we can dream!

Jon, I felt the same way about the RA-5C when i saw it on the shelf of a hobby store when i was 5 or 6. stunning plane! I can't believe you worked at the intrepid! I have yet to visit new york and not drop by the old gal. I'm sure i dropped by in the summer of 1994, but i'm not one of those annoying kids that open up the panels! Ooops! Taxi's here and i'm late for a meeting. gotta run! Big Smile [:D]

Cobra

According to the article in Aviation Week the Concorde is to be "placed on a 260-ft. barge attached to the museum complex, where it will house exhibits on supersonic flight". It says nothing about being in an enclosed structure. It also states that the barge to be used was once used by NASA to ferry Apollo Saturn V Moon rockets. The exhibit is supposed to open next spring at Pier 86.

Very cool that you once worked there.

I remodeled a HollyWood Video store in Westchester in Nov. 1999. Nice area of town. It was an overnight project and our temp laborers insisted on wallking with us to and from our van during the night to protect us (ha,ha)!

Hope you have a very nice visit with your folks.

Smile [:)] Lots of fun things happening at the intrepid! My one disappiontment was that my folks never took my down there during fleet week! Big Smile [:D]

That place is so great...

An FJ Fury, an F3D Skyknight, one of two F3H Demons left in existance, and two F11F Tigers

Amazing that they could get these rare planes.
