Anyone interested in another group build?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 6:03 PM
I was thinking that maybe whomever is interested could participate in a group build of a USMC theme. Anything that the USMC has ever flown, be it helos, biplanes, V/STOL, gyrocopters, etc. I would think that a completion date of the end of July 2004 would be reasonable. And it doesn't matter what brand of kit you use, or if you use aftermarket parts, or if it's a resin kit, etc. As long as you want to build it, and it's used by the USMC. Any takers? Oh, and ANY advice in the administration of this group build would be greatly appreciated. I've never participated in one, nor have I hosted, or sponsored, one. Looking forward to your replies to this.

Ooooh, I forgot about the OV-10. Too bad no one makes a decent 1/48th version of that (I don't consider the Testors offering a DECENT kit).

So, are you in, AJACKETSFAN? I haven't decided what I'm gonna build yet, but, it'll be 1/48th, and probably have a prop.

Yeah, I mean I've never done a group build but the time frame seems ok. And it would give me a chance to practice camo with the airbrush... I'm in when do we start, what does a group build entail?

Darned if I know. I've never participated in a group build, either. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the participants have their stuff displayed in this post on 30 July 2004, you can start whenever you like. I would say that we don't display the models until 30 July 2004 - get all models displayed on the same day. I would like to have all participants sign in via this post by the end of this month (Jan 2004) though, just so we all know who is in on the fun. What do you think? Did I forget anything? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Might join in but can not get started before mid to end of Feb. USMC aircraft is a huge subject.. Couldn't we narrow it a little... I think group build are great because one can exchange info and/or experience about a particular type or particular model. Making it too wide dilutes the interest, to me in any case.

This would fall into the chopper area, but why not be ver specific, and make it all Blackhawks and their varients?

I could get into this one-- I have an AM SBD-1 that is begging for the colorful pre-war USMC scheme...

ngc7293,

Marines don't fly Blackhawks, except for maybe one of the Presidential helos (at least, I THINK I'm correct on that one........ain't I??).

Anyway, I thought that just a USMC theme would be great. Nothing specific. Anyone can build what they want, as long as it's historically accurate and has USMC markings. I don't see why we would have to get any more specific than that. It's just for fun. My model club here in Indy has done similar things in the past, and everyone enjoyed it. Our themes were 'early '50s jets, Hollywood planes, Korean War planes, Desert Storm aircraft, etc. Anyone could build what they wanted, in any scale, as long as it pertained to that particular theme. I didn't participate in any of them mainly because I didn't know if I'd be at the meeting that the builds were due on (my job keeps me on the road a lot). So, this will be my first group build. I didn't want to start with anything too specific for my first one. And, if you don't want to participate, that's fine. It's just for fun. Looking forward to seeing what gets built!!

So far, I count four participants (AJACKETSFAN, Jeeves, EasyCo), including me. And if you wanna back out later on, no problem. No obligations on this.

Semper Fi!!!!

HMX-1 (presidents squadron) flies a couple VH-60N "Whitehawks," but those are the only 60s in the Marine Corps inventory. They are painted in the same scheme as their H-3s, 46s, and most of their 53s (one or two have the TPS if memory serves)

hope that helps.

edit - the 46s and non-TPS 53s are green all over, no white save for the stripes

mattp,

Thanks for the info. That's kinda what I thought. I knew only Marines flew the Presidential helos, and that the President has a Blackhawk derivative, but I just wasn't sure. Thank Goodness for this forum!!!

I think that sounds like a great idea, I've never been in a group build, and the Marine theme would be awesome, since I was in them.....oh by the way does that mean we can build the Presidential Helos as well, that would be really cool!!

kik36,

As long as it's a USMC aircraft..................... A Presidential helo sounds good to me.

Where in the Corps were you stationed? I was at Cherry Point, NC, for almost my entire 11.5 years in the Corps. Semper Fi!!

wiiluride,

Great to have you both in on this. As you've probably already read earlier, this is my first group build, so any advice or help you wanna give me is much appreciated!! I haven't decided what I'm building, neither. As long it's decided on, built, and displayed by July 30................

well, thanks for inviting everybody. we have never done a group build either, we are going to take this one as a learning expierence. It will be great for all of us. Maybe we'll head one up one day. We have decided on vmf 121 squadron from ww2. we may both be doing the same plane as it is my wife's first, that way we can work together step by step. Of course she is doing hers all by herself, including painting.Big Smile [:D] it will more than likely an f4f-4 or an f4u corsair. Not sure but I'll let you know when we decide. we started by getting some background on the squadron.Wink [;)]

More to come later

Gary, sorry about the slow response, I was stationed in MCRD San Diego, Pendleton, NAS Millington, MCAS New River (your backyard)....all for training, then back out to MCAS Tustin, MCAS El Toro, and finally MCAS Miramar after all of the base closures. All in four years, of course that doesn't include the west pac!! LOL What was your MOS?? Mine was 6323, CH-53E Avionics Technician.....I love that bird!!! Semper FI

I'm not sure of this one, but I have a 1/72 scale V-22 Osprey that I'd like to build for this theme. Are the Marines using these yet or are they still being tested?

Dan, this isn't my build but I don't think anyone will split hairs over your Osprey. It looks like there's a bunch of us taking part in this build. I can't wait to see all of the pix this summer!Cool [8D]

I would say if it was used by the Marines- it's fair game. They sure aren't flying Dauntlesses any more-- and I am not 100% sure if they ever flew them in combat-- but the pre-war scheme is just too cool to pass up Smile [:)]

kik36,

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you. A lot of things came up over the last few days, including FSM's website being out of action over the weekend (at least, I didn't know how to get around it, although it seems that others figured it out). So, unfortunately, I'm just now (20 Jan 2004 2220) getting back on.

Yep, as far as I'm concerned, everything's still a go. I'll wait until 31 Jan 2004 before not taking any more participants. The deadline for completion and posting is 30 July 2004. That should give everyone plenty of time to finish. Plus, as I've mentioned before, there are no obligations on this. If you need to back out, for any reason, no problem.

I've decided to build the AMT 1/48th Grumman F7F-3N Tigercat. It's only one color, so it should be easy to paint. Big Smile [:D]

For kik36 again - My MOS back in the Corps was 6482 - Deceptive Electronic Countermeasures Technician for the Harriers. I worked on radar jammers, radar deceivers, IR jamming, IR deception, etc. Really neat stuff. Spent six months in Iwakuni, Japan, and six months in the Persian Gulf in 1991 on the USS Saipan. I now work on cancer treatment equipment for a Dutch company called Nucletron.

The V-22 Osprey will be an EXCELLENT build for this. The Marines are testing them, so it qualifies. As long as it actually flew, and wore USMC markings................

SBD's were flown by the Marines in combat during the early parts of WWII. I like the paint on them also. Can't wait to see it.

Semper Fi!!!!

That's fantastic Gary!!! It's always great to hear from another 'Devil Dog'!! All right, I'm definately in, but am still deciding what plane to build.....will definately state which by Jan 31. I had my eyes on a Stinson L-5 Sentinel (designated OY-1 for the Marines), but am having trouble finding the kit (made by sword, but out of production). I'll keep looking, but if I can't find it by next week, I may have to substitute an F4. Looking forward to seeing everyone's stuff!!!

Oh man, I didn't think about an F-4 hmmmm....maybe I'll have time to do two...
In the mean time does anyone know if the marine OV-10's are now wearing a low vis. gray? The kit I have is the desert storm version from Academy and they have it in desert camo... I want it up to date though... that was 10+ years ago...
