The Big putty smooth out Question!?
Posted by DrCemento on Monday, January 12, 2004 10:55 AM

Alright. the project is an Academy p-47n with a bare-metal finish to be completed with a variety of Floquil and testors metalizers. Maybe It was just my relative in- experiance or a bad kit but i ended up with a few little spots to putty - namely the underbelly wing -fuselage joints I decided to use gap filler glue on one side and Squadron white on the othe.r this went well - the super glue being very messy to sand down. The squadron goes on wonderfully thanks to the acetone method on swannys sight. however when prime -time came (after sanding and polishing) -I used floquils old silver - the areas done with squadron sill seemed a little rough! whats going on here? anybody have any Ideas - or do I just need to stick to Super glue - in that case does anyone have super strategic application techniques similar to the putty Idea, so you don't end up with huge lumps of hard glue to sand down?

Give it a light sand after priming and you should be fine. When using CA as a filler are you using accelerator and then sanding right away? Also - diamond needle files or sanding sticks make it a lot easier. When I use CA I put a drop on a post-it note then apply it to the model's seam with a dental pick so that I have only what is needed, very little excess.

I do tend to be a little impatiant and use accelerater - I was wondering if this could affect the strength or texture of the glue? good or bad?

I always use accelerator and have not experienced any strength issues. It is a must when using CA as a filler. If you let CA cure all the way you will have a b***h of a time sanding it. With accelerator for 5 to 10 minutes it will be slightly soft and very sandable.

Hey, swanny, i'm pretty sure you've been asked this question before, but what brand of CA/Accelerator do you use? I'm not too sure if i want to be using CA especially since the fumes fog up clear plastc...
