First Tamiya...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 12, 2004 3:26 PM
Well I took everyone's advice and bought my first Tamiya kit. It is the 1/72 Bell
X-1, the one that includes the clear fuselage sections. It looks fantastic in the box. I probably won't use the clear fuselage but it is cool to have the option. Do all Tamiya kits come with a ball bearing for weight or just this kit? I plan on using Floquil Reefer Orange (toned down for scale). Tongue [:P]

I've never seen an included weight before but I'm glad someone has finally done it. Either way, Tamiya has very nice kits.

P.S., Nice "Jugs"

Yeah they showed putting it in the O2 tank in the directions, it is a ball bearing, good weight for the size. Maybe it is just for the clear editions.

I have build a few Kits that had nose weight included, some of them were Tamiya too.

I think they are done for planes that really need it and when the weight needs to be of a certain shape too.

Well your first Tamiya kit wasn't actually tooled by Tamiya. The Bell X-1 was originally tooled by another manufacturer (whose name I can't recall at the moment) and Tamiya bought them out when they first decided to venture into 1/72 scale. That said, the Bell X-1 marketed by Tamiya is an excellent kit. Enjoy!!

Tamiya usually puts in nose weight for the tricycle-geared aircraft, like the Gloster Meteor, the Dornier Do-335, the Me-262A-2a, etc. Too bad hardly anyone else does. Good luck on your X-1. Paint it TENNESSEE ORANGE!!!! (If I remember correctly, your wife is from Tennessee??)Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

Tamiya products do rume because the plastic is of good quality, the research is great and when you build one, you learn something from their instructions, their instructions on building the model are very good, their paint guide is good, their selection is second to none in my opinion, surface detail is good and you can be sure, things are going to fit together properly. I wish they would build a B17 as well. I still have the revell or whatever it is in a box in pieces. Just disgusted with no interior detail and crappy fit. It sits atop my 1:32 revell corsair with its warped plastic parts. I am negative ain't I!

Thanks for the info everyone...glad to hear I got a good kit. Don't worry I'll be gettin' some more of their 1/72 collection.(and probably the 1/48). I plan on starting this bird once I have made some progress on the Academy 1/72 P-47 razorback that I just started. I'm also still working on my F-16 but it's stalled due to lack of a spray booth.

Gary, sorry dude she isn't from the Volunteer state, she's a Buckeye just like me. Did I lead you to that conclusion? (I can't remember...)Smile [:)]
