Betty Bomber Finished Photos
Posted by wing_nut on Friday, September 17, 2010 9:57 AM

Hello me old aircraft chestnuts.

Just started a commission build for a client that wishes to remain anonymous. Let's go with John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt... JJ for short.

This is Hasegawa 1/72 Betty GM42E with an Ohka.  I am sure the translation of "Ohka", must be. "I'm not gettin' in that!"

Wings have a bit of a warp.  But they are so thin out at the tips it was easy to fix.  Since this will be pretty close to OOB the interior is close to done.  Just added the seat belts and will pick out some details to highlight.

I was wondering why 1/72nd but the wing shot shows that even at 1/72 it's a decent size after all.

I'll have to check back on this one.

That is a very nice kit, I didn't find any major issues with it. You are going to have much fun masking canopies!

Have you flown a Ford lately?

LOL...I think it actually meant "Cherry Blossom"....as in, "I'm not gonna get in that cherry blossom!"  The allies called them a "Baka" which transalted into "stupid"...

If you look close---you can see Ohkas slung under most of these Bettys...I also see how your wing got warped at the very end of the clip:

Marc,

That wing "warp" must have raised your ire! Always enjoy your work so I'll be keeping an eye on your Betty.

Nice shot of the workbench in action. Always like these shots on posts!

Thanks 48.  The bench is in a pretty docile stare there. I'll get another pic when I am about 1/2 way through the build.  Looks like a bomb went off.Stick out tongue

Almost had to turn this into a crashed in the jungle dio.  I like to speed dry things in my clothes dryer with the sweater rack.  It holds the model in the middle while the drum whirls around it.  Well... the blade on the drum that mixes up the clothes caught a wing tip as soon as I hot the GO button.  What a horrible sound.  Luckily it only popped a few seams.

Most of the airframe is done and I am starting on the little details to add.  Then the rest of the glass and the thousandWhistling little masks from the Eduard setTongue Tied.  Added some Eduard belts to the pit but the rest will bee OOB... if I didn't say that already.

Looking good! Is that the "cherry blossom" on the sprues in the background of the 3rd pic?  Looks big even in 72nd scale!

Thanks Darwin.  In secret communication with JJ... he is pleased so farWink

Manny that is neat film.  I know a lot of the flashes are hit at about 55 secs .  There is a steady flash from right about where those mid-section Mg's are located.  And that guy that lost the wings at the end.  It took me a bit to realize you could see the Ohka underneath.

Yeah, I thought the animation at the very begining was pretty cool; you can see how they must have released those things...you can barely make out in the footage that most of 'em seem to be carrying the Ohkas underneath...makes you wonder if the US pilots even knew that they were carrying them until later when the film could be analyzed...

Only one thing worse than being strapped in an Ohka when it was released from the Betty: being strapped in the Ohka under a Betty when it had its wing shot off...

Hmmm maybe.  I am running into some fit issues with the engine nacelles. There is a molded in step in the back plate that the prevent the sides of the nacelle seating all the way back and leaves like 1/64" gap.  I've looked at this over and over again and it's not me.  And yet everyone say this will be smooth sailing.
