Back after a long break
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 2:10 PM
i've recently gotten back into modeling, i tinkered with them growing up, and I have a couple of models already sitting in my closet waiting for attention. I just have a few quick questions:1. I need suggestions on airbrushes that will get me started and that i will be able to use for a while(poor college student),2.I am working on a A-4E/F Skyhawk from the Vietnam War era and I was just wondering what the usual warload was for a generic carrier based mission, I don't want to load the thing up with an unrealistic amount of bombs and zunnis.

thank you all in advance for the knowledge! specialedgranny

Welcome back to Modelville! As for airbrushes, you can't beat Badger for price and reliability -maybe an Anthem type for starters.

I too am a Badger fan having a 150 and a 360. The 360 may be a little much to start with but the 150 is very reliable and so is the Anthem. Check out http://www.dixieart.com for best pricing and widest selection. Can't help with the A-4 load out as I'm a WW2 buff. Welcome back to the hobby.

Go with the Aztec line. They have single-action and double-action brushes, and the tips are replaceable. Plus, you don't have to take them completely apart to get them clean (indeed, you CAN'T take them apart!!). I've had good luck with my Aztec brush. I occasionally have to replace a tip because I forgot to clean the tip after use (I usually remember that I used the tip about three days too late), but they're relatively inexpensive. The brushes run from about $30 - $100, depending on what you want.

Welcome to the forum, specialedgranny. You may want to peruse the airbrush pages. There, you will find as many recommendations as there are modelers. Find something that fits your needs.

Sorry, can't help you on the aircraft question, as I only build WW II.

hey specialedgranny,
The last two months of the Fine Scale Modeler magazine have a article in them about airbrushes. (last month was single-action, this month double) They discuss the difference between all of the brands and even give price differences. If you can't find the issues E-mail me and I'll mail them to you...or something.

Welcome back, Specialedgranny!!
The only weapon load reference pic I could find in my collection shows 3 Marine A-4Es, of VMA-311. Each had a centerline fuel tank and MERs with 4 500 pounders on each inside wing pylon.
Didn't have any Navy birds. Sorry.

welcome back to the fold specialedgranny,
again, "modern" isn't my bag, but since you're in the emerald isle, have you tried www.hannants.com ?
i use them a lot, and they've got a very user friendly site...Smile [:)]
try a 1/48 search under decals/military aircraft using either phantom or eagle as your key words; you'll probably get a lot of answers, but i'm sure you'll get something stationed in japan...
hope this helpsSmile [:)]
