Mistel?

I've built the 1/48 DML Mistel-2/S2. Its an FW 190F-8 atop a Ju 88G (converted to a bomb). This kit will be rereleased shortly, and you can pre-order it at Great Models for $48. The S2 is the trainer version, with the Ju 88 manned (not configured as a bomb)
I have, but haven't started, the Me 262 Mistel. This kit is also 1/48 by Dragon. It includes a very nice trolly, complete with RATO (like those fitted to the Arado 234). There was a 1/72 kit of the Me 262 available from MPM a few years ago, but I don't know if its still available (limited-run kit)
The Luftwaffe also used the Ju 88 with a Bf 109. I've never seen this in kit form, in any scale, but the conversion would be pretty straight forward.

Scale Aviation Modeller International, a UK magazine (look up sampublications on the net) had a model feature on the Mistel in the December '02 edition, you can get back issues easily enough. This combined parts from the Italeri Mistel (looks like kit #672) an AMT JU88G-1/G-6, and a Revell Fw190 A-8/R-11, though to be strictly correct you will also need a 'blown' canopy for the 190. All this to produce a late model Mistel in 1/72nd scale, the Italeri kit was used just for the warhead.
If you go for this method you will need the article as there are some differences in the profiles of the two Junkers, & the 'how to' is explained well.
A copy of the magazine should be yours for less than ten dollars. I can't email a copy to you, my scanner is in therapy, sorry.
The Mistel you may see in pics' at Farnborough, post war, was made up by them and should have a bf109 on it's back, not a FW 190.
Finally, I understand that the choice of a 109 or a 190 had to do with the fuel octane rating of the 88, ie 87 or 100, can anyone confirm this?

I did a search & found the Dragon mistel 2 (190/88) at www.kingkit.co.uk. Are you sitting down?, it's 50 UK pounds! I reread the SAMI article again last night, to do the mistel2 you can use the Hasegawa 190 (bulged canopy) but you also need new props, spinners & engine cooling fans for the JU88, so that could work out expensive too. I first saw pictures of a mistel some 35 years ago, in an old copy of Meccano magazine in a barbers shop! It's been an interest of mine ever since.
BTW, it was also sometimes referred to as Father & Son ( I've seen a cartoon used as a sort of squadron badge, of a man, arms outstretched, flying, with a boy on his shoulders), and The official (I think) code word was Beethoven)

albertsponson - The Dragon kit (as stated above) is going to be available for $48 U.S. It includes the Schrage Muzik guns & blown canopy for the FW 190. Two warheads, large fuel tanks, and a ladder are also included. PE parts were included in DML issue (I'm unsure if Dragon will include them, but they did include them in the Me 262 Mistel kit) Its not quite as expensive here in the U.S. Kits are FW 190F-8 & Ju 88G-1. 292 parts are included in the kit. The wheels are not flattened, but you could do that yourself, or get the True details resin.
I haven't noticed "tons" of inaccuracy in the Dragon Me 262. It matches closely the reference pics I have, and looks accurate enough for me. There is, however a 1/16" gap on either side of the lower rear wingroot. Easily filled. It is a tricky build, but dry fitting alleviates most potential headaches.

www.greatmodels.com has two listed for 1/72. The Airfix Dornier Do 217, and Italeri's Mistel 1(Ju88A-4 w/Bf 109F). Both are reasonably priced.

Do a search on their website for "1/72 mistel" and they will come up.
