Searching a nose art image from P-51 "Sky Bouncer"
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 6, 2003 3:31 PM
Hey Folks,

as you can see I´m a newbie from austria (yeah, the guys who invited Pamela Anderson Shy [8)] to their famous "Opernball") and I have a question for all the mustang freaks in this forum, please try to help!

Okay, here´s my problem:
Since the voices told me Tongue [:P] to built all mustangs appearing in the "famous 4" foto

I did quite fine, 2 birds close to finish (Lou IV and Easy 2 Sugar)
but now I´m in great trouble as I couldnt find a good image of the "sky bouncer" nose art. There is no such decal available, so I have to draw it on by myself. For that purpose I need a drawing, photo or somekind of image stuff I could obtain to get a closer look at the nose art.
I allready posted this question in german modelling forums, but no image yet.
As Leia said to R2 at the very beginning: "Helft mir Obi-Wan-Kenobi, ihr seid meine letzte Hoffnung!" (help me Obi-Wan...)Wink [;)]
Could you help me?

Ups, I forgot: P-51 D No.44-13568, E2*A, "Sky Bouncer" was flown by Capt. Bruce W "Red" Rowlett, 361st FG, 375th FS, Little Walden, 1944

Actually, the decal is available, but you have to find the old Hawk P-51D kit. It was one of the two decal options that came withit; the other was an Israeli Mustang. Hope this helps. I don't know of any other decals out there at present for this subject.- Ed S.

If you would listen to everybody about the inaccuracies, most of the kits on your shelf would not have been built Too Close For Guns, Switching To Finger

Hey Jerry!

I dunno if these will be good enuff for you to work from, and you may have already found something better, but here you are anyway. If you like I can email some larger images to you.

The first two show "Sky Bouncer" a bit more clearly than in the photo you had. Still kinda fuzzy, but they reveal both the script used in the name and the colors used, which I believe are simply white and black as many other Yellowjacket Stangs had their names done in the same style.

The third shot is of the fourth Stang in the flight, Suzy G. This isn't the highest quality shot, but it's the best I could find. Also have some color images (also poor quality) that seem to show the colors of this name as being yellow and black. I'm not totally sure of this, however.

Ich hoffe, daß dieses Ihnen hilft!

Ja danke du hast mir sehr geholfen!
Thanx a lot Wolf, yet the best pic I´ve got. But I think the letters are red like the one´s showing on LOU IV. (??)
However, that bird´s gonna look pretty fine anyway. I post a topic when i´m finished.

Hey Jerry,

Kein problem. Ich bin immer bereit zu helfen!

I know what you mean about the red, I considered that as well. If there's red in it at all, it's shadowed. But I think the red tint in this photo is a result of a typically mediocre litho job. If you notice, there's also a red tint around many of the other dark areas, such as the national insignia and the lower part of the "C" on "LOU IV". It even appears around the windscreen framing on the "Bouncer", and there's no red there for sure! Again, a typical printing job, I think.

Also, comparing black and white shots of the name on "LOU IV" and "Sky Bouncer", the tonal variance indicating black and red is quite apparent on "LOU" but there seems to be none on the "Bouncer". I could be wrong, though, and I'll let you be the judge! LOL If you like, I'll email you the larger images so you can examine them yourself. If so, send me an email with your address: blackwolfscd3945@aol.com

Please let me know what you think though, because I like exchanging ideas and thoughts. Maybe you look at it in a way I never thought of or perhaps you see something I don't. And besides, I may want to build this ship myself in the future!

I don't mean to be a pain, I just wanna help! Wink [;)]

Jerry, would you believe I found the old "Sky Bouncer" markings from that old Hawk kit? I'll send them if you're interested. Contact me offline and let me know. -Ed

Jerry,

Right you are! Did some more digging and found another image that shows very clearly "Sky Bouncer" in red, not black! I'll scan it then send it (as well as the others) off to you ASIAC. I haven't forgotten!
