Beautiful P-47 . I do like this kit a lot fun to build and I always have room for more thunderbolts

One of the nicest P-47's I've seen yet!

I have this kit on my bench right now, I finished the cockpit about three weeks ago, but haven't had time to work since then because of final exams, concerts, etc. Christmas Break is four days away, and I hope to spend every waking moment of it working on this and possibly another bird. I plan to use the kit's decals to make Frank Klibbes Little Chief. So far, the kit seems great, haven't used any AM, just scratchbuilt the harnesses out of masking tape. Mine won't be anything compared to yours, but you gave me some inspiration to keep going! Great work!

Guys, thanks for the kind words.

Trouble maker 66, I airbrush on Model Master paints generally.  I enjoy weathering the crap out of my warbirds, so they tend to look a little rough.  And I still don't approach how bad the real aircraft look in photographs.

Satch_ip,  I happened to do the Otaki Razorback several years ago in a NMF.  It is a very good kit, just a little less detail than the Tamiya or Hasegawa.

Butz,  I carefully cut out the elevators and rudder.  The rudder hinges survived, but the elevator hinges were so thin and there was a gap between the upper and lower halves.  I chose to cut hinges from sheet styrene and shape them to fit.  I connected the two elevators with a brass rod.  The rod extends about halfway out into the leading edge of each elevator.  I made a collar that attached to the center of the brass rod and then inserted into the very rear of the fuselage where the elevators cables passed through.   It is not an exercise that I normally perform, but I wanted to do a little more on Gentile's aircraft.

Hans, I had a tough time minimizing some silvering all over this bird.  I removed some with Micro Set.  I was able to drybrush some spots away, and weathering hid some more.  The crystal clear clarity of digital photography highlighted several more spots that I may touch up a little more.  I too love the look of these 4th FG Jugs.  There is a load of cool nose art gems in the 4th.  I've done Gentile's Spitfire, P-51, and now his P-47.  The Mustang is 10 or 12 years old, and I intend to build a new P-51 in the near future.  Rick.

Overall, a really nice build... I have that kit in the hangar (as well as the Monogram &  HAWK Razorbacks) and like what I'm seeing... Noticed a little silvering on the data plaque but that's about it, except for the paint on the top of the flap interior... The general consensus is that P-47s had the flap's top interior painted the same as the flap exterior (See Doog's "P-47 Flaps Question" thread)..

Gentile's a great subject, too... Can't go wrong with the "Bad Boy of the 4th" and his various mounts... The guy's got some great looking birds in his "logbook"...  You could kill off an entire year's-worth of modeling just doing Gentile's aircraft, lol..

Looking forward to more of your work, pard..

Sweet!  Bow Down  Tough act to follow.  My Razorback will look similar.  78th FG, Jack Price.  But I am starting with an Otaki/Arii kit, though.  Wink

I was really impressed with the details on this kit.  The blast tubes that you mention are kit issue and not altered in the least.  They are molded with the tips already "drilled out".  They look as good as any aftermarket.  The other thing about them, is that Tamiya so well engineered the mounts that I merely pushed the tubes into the holes until they bottomed out.  The fit was so snug that no glue was required.  If you noticed, Gentile, like many other 4th pilots had the outboard guns removed to create less weight and allow for more ammunition to be carried.  Rick.

Tamiya's P-47 Razorback "Donnie Boy" Complete
Posted by Wabashwheels on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 1:52 PM

I've just completed Don Gentile's "Donnie Boy" for the Mighty 8th's Group build.  This is the Tamiya version of the P-47 Razorback.  The kit is usual Tamiya quality.  I used very few aftermarket parts, Eduard seat harness and cockpit placards.  I did reposition the rudder and elevators on the tail.  I also scratchbuilt the engine wiring harness and added hydraulic lines.  I used Aeromaster 48-389 decals for the main markings and nose art.  Model Master OD and Neutral Grey covered the aircraft.
