FSM Aircraft ID Quiz #7
Posted by BlackWolf3945 on Saturday, January 17, 2004 9:22 PM
THIS QUIZ HAS ENDED!!!

Okay, here's the next one. I'm looking for the military or the civilian designations on this one, as some civilian variants were also used by the military.

Although, no matter who used it, I don't think the designers had envisaged this particular task! Hmmm, would caddying fall under the category of miscellaneous duties?

(I know, there's a separate helo forum, but to keep things simple I'm going to keep all the quizzes here.)

Anyhoo, as usual, submit replies via the email button below. I'll give the answer next weekend-ish (January 24th/25th).

I'm going to start editing the first post in each quiz in two ways.

1) I'll keep a running score of total replies vs. correct replies at the end of the post.

2) When the quiz is over I'm going to add a notice to that effect to the beginning of the post because I'm still getting replies for quizzes that have ended!

That's not so bad in and of itself, but some of them have been wrong even after the answer had been given! Dunce [D)]

Tip: Go through the WHOLE thread before you respond!

OH, and bonus kudos if you can identify the golfer!!

(hint: he wasn't a professional golfer)
(another hint: "YIPE!!")

Dangit, the enlarge feature ain't workin' again! Here's a link to the larger image.

Here's another hint for the airplane only guys. It's called a "helicopter".

I doubt Mickey Rooney would be flying that. Mickey would be one of the golfers off camera complaining about and questioning the necessity of the whole stunt. Mickey - "Now is that really necessay? Here we are on the golf course..."

"Hello again..."

Is someone thinking of Andy Rooney? Wink [;)]

And... ADAM SANDLER!!!!

You had the right genre, this guy was a comedian. I'll give another hint. He was a HUGE star back in the 30's, 40's and into the 50's, long before Sandler was even a twinkle in his mother's eye.

I don't usually put labels on things (or people) like best, worst and really mean it. But, in my opinion, this fella was the best radio comedian with the best radio comedy EVER. I'll throw out some more hints, cuz this is getting to be more fun than the helo...

I'm out of this one as well as I know next to nothing about helicoptors. As far as the golfer goes....ummmmmmm.

Mickey Rooney was airlifted into Bart's treehouse once on the Simpsons, but he was hanging onto a rope ladder, not flying it.

Tough one again Steve, keep it up!

Well, I dunno for sure on either. Definately not the time, though I'd guess the late 40's early 50's. The location, most likely, was the Hillcrest Country Club across Pico Blvd from the 20th Century Fox Studios; that's where this fella usually played.

Could'nt have been Micky Rooney. Wrong gear configuration (heh, heh). I hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag on that one.

Mickey got gunned down at the end, remember. A flight of Sandys and they couldn't stay long enough to save them.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Your'e wrong - To the Air Force, they are helicopters, to the Navy, they are rotary wings, to the Army, they are fling wings and to the Marines they are Uh! Uh! Uh! (as they point to them). hehehe lol

But every grunt I know calls them choppers

I belive that Mickey was teamed with an Australian car when he wore the top hat.
(That should cause some confusion!!)

Geez, this one is turning out a bit different than I had envisioned! I knew the helo would be easy, and you guys are almost acin' this one. But I'm quite surprised that, of nine guesses, six folks got the golfer. Although, we do have quite an age cross-section here, so maybe that's it. Either that or some legends die hard...

Hmm... starting to get a few interesting replies now, especially on the golfer. Some of you have guessed that it's a certain well-known entertainer who was a radio comedian and who is generally regarded as Mr. USO. I have to say that you're close, this fella was, indeed, a well-known entertainer and was a radio comedian. He also did quite a bit of USO work during WWII.

Here's a couple more shots of the man during USO tours:

If you look closely at the above photo, the nose art may give you some clues. (Sorry, the image isn't very large...)

This is the man in question (sitting, with hat) playing checkers with a serviceman.

BTW, a couple have commented that the photo of the helo won't enlarge, which I noticed right after I posted it. That's why I posted a link to the larger image right underneath... Blindfold [X-)] Wink [;)]
