Help with AT-6 Texan....

Chrome yellow maybe? It's hard to tell, test spray some insignia yellow and see how you think it compares. I flew the blue one and just picked up a kit of this plane last week The loops and rolls were great fun,and I even made a diving guns pass on a lower Cessna, woohoo!

What kit are you building?? I grabbed up the 1:48 Heller kit-- not too bad, although the fuselage fit is a touch off...and the hub caps on the gear are totally misshapen and useless... gonna have to figure something else out for those.... I just wasn't sure if there was a standard color used for trainers in WWII-- I know the RAF had it's "Trainer Yellow" paint- and I wasn't sure if the US had something similar...thanks madda-- I'll try out a test scrap...

Who makes a good T-6 kit... I have an SNJ in 1/72 but it's a Testors and isn't a very good kit...

If this helps, during WW2 and into the 1950s, some Air Force and Navy trainers were painted Orange Yellow ANA 614 - FS 33538 or 13538.

There are two possibilities in 1/48.
The first one, you may have to do an ebay search on, is the old Monogram kit. Except for the raised panel lines, this is a very good kit.
Second, is the Occicental kit from Portugal.
Both kits are almost identical in the way they assemble. The cockpits are little tube frame work subassemblies.
I have both kits and they are both excellent kits.

And don't forget the aforementioned Heller 1/48 Texan....overall-- pretty well detailed...I like how the engine comes together-- looks pretty neat all gussied up.....I grabbed it from Squadron for under $20.

schmeter pit-- thanks for the color reference....I wonder if any companies make that paint color?? I don't see it in my Modelmaster book...maybe Tamiya?

FS 33538 that schmeter pit mentioned is listed as Insignia Yellow....and FS 13538 is Chrome Yellow-- so I guess I might be OK-- I'll still spray on scrap-- but I'd rather use up what I have then buy more....

(I'd already be finished with it, except that I screwed up the cammo job and had to strip it and start over. Stripping it screwed a bunch of other stuff up, so I'm set back a week or more on it. I don't build very quickly.)

You know, NATG repaints it's planes, so the color probably isn't exactly as it was anyway. I'd bet that any gloss yellow you can get that's fairly close would work beautifully.

I'll check on those kits... how about 1/72 anyone know of any good ones there? In the mean time 1/48 will work. By the way did you enjoy the ride? There is an add for a T-6 ride at a small privately owned local airstrip... I just have to figure out how to get the funds from the wife!

I suppose I could email them and ask them which color they paint the Yellow Texan as well-- but they weren't all too helpful when I asked for interior pics LOL

I sure did-- I splurged and bought the 30 minute ride with video and acrobatics-- did a roll and a loop-- the pilot did an Immelman and Split-S and cloverleaf...and we actually flew some formation with the Blue SNJ that was also up at the time....

Academy's got a good Texan kit in 1/72, better than other Texan kits that I know of. It is a T-6G model.
