Today's progress on the production line

Got some painting done on the topsides today.

The Stuka will be wearing winter camo, so I just did a rough job on the splinter. Gee, do I HATE masking !

This camo isn't finished yet. There will be large splotches & an overspray applied later.

The Ta 152 just needs a little touch-up of RLM 76. My airbrush "hiccupped" on me a couple of times. Oh, well.

The FW 190, probably the worst-fitting kit in the project, is proving to be the easiest to finish !

I hope I left myself something to do tomorrow, besides paint the tires.

Nice also to see them in progress, as are most of mine (I have yet to finish my first Luftwaffe A/C that I started last August. And now I have another on the bench!)

When you say Winter camo for the Stuka, do you mean like a Russian Front scheme? Which colors are on the Stuka topsides right now?

stinger - the Ju 87 is painted in Aeromaster (enamel) RLM 71 Dark Green and darkened Model Master RLM 70 Black Green. Here's a profile of the winter camo :

I really like this winter scheme.

AJACKETSFAN - there's nothing like luftwaffe aircraft for camo. Definately my fave.

Hey Pix - not bad, not bad at all. I ordered that Eduard set and had to pick up the Aires replacement cannons also - can hardly wait for them to get here.

You say you darkened the Black Green?

I sprayed my Dornier with "Aircraft Colors" 70 and 71 (Old Aeromaster formula from what I am told). My Dark Green is way too light I think. Is it because they are "toned down" colors?
Maybe I should switch brands of paint?

is the splinter on all those planes airbrushed freehand, without the use of a mask?
my prob on my recent 109 was that the camo was masked, so i found it hard to "blend" to the mottle effect on the fuselage Disapprove [V]

...any tips, or just a master with the old airbrush?! Black Eye [B)]

nick - the Stuka was painted using drafting tape for masks. This stuff is so low-tack that it occasionally lifts ! The rest were painted freehand. The only tip I can give is to practice with your airbrush. Try different thinning ratios & air pressure. I also spray 1/2 inch or closer to the model at low pressure (below 10 psi). "Monkey" around with it on a scrap model or paper until you find what works best for you. I did a LOT of trial & error (mostly error) before I found a way to get consistent results.

stinger - I darkened the RLM 70 because the Aeromaster RLM 71 was darker than the MM paint. Its the relationship between the two in which I was interested. Generally, the manufacturer's RLM colors will be matched to each other.

Karl - I have a digital video cam, Adobe Premiere video editing software, and a DVD writer. Big Smile [:D]

Looks like I can start work on the Pearl Harbor group build today !

Incredible! Looking so good. Next to Mustangs and Spits I have to say I really like the Stuka. Bought the 1/72 Academy one for my son; he just completed the cockpit and it looks really good. Showed him how to drybrush to highlight detail. He's now ready to add the wings. Looking forward to showing him these pics for inspiration... Thanx, Pix.

allan - my 48 year-old eyes can't even SEE the model without my +2.75x mag. reading glasses ! Luckily, it helps prevent eyestrain. Now if I could just see without 'em...

frosty - the "assembly line" is not as difficult as it may seem, when painting with the same colors. I end up cleaning the airbrush 1/4 as many times as I would if I built them separately.

styrene - I'll edit this post to include a pic of the 87 cockpit.

nsclcctl - its the 1/48 Hasegawa Ju 87G-2 (Rudel's anti-tank bird) with the Eduard PE set (100+ parts)

The other kits (all 1/48) are :

Trimaster Me 262A-1a out of the box
DML Ta 152H-1 with Eduard PE
Dragon FW 190A-8 with Eduard PE

I understand now why you darked the RLM 70. I was never happy with the paint I used, and won't use it again,at least for RLM greens.

Allan - thanks for the compliment! I only hope that some day I can get even close to what Pix can do, but as he is always improving, I know I'll never catch up.

To All Forum Members - I feel that I made a major Forum boo boo, in that I posted a pic of my own model in a thread where Pix is so deserved of the attention. Sorry Pix, didn't mean to step on your topic. Just wanted you to evaluate my project (The Dornier Disaster).

stinger - Its perfectly alright with me to post a pic of your model in my thread. In fact, I'm flattered that my work inspired you to ask me a question, and to show me your experience with the paints. As for the attention, I don't post my pics for that reason, yet I am humbled by the kind words directed at my work. I post my pics to share, as that is what this site is all about to me. The sharing of ideas and experiences that more than a few of us get from this site. I love to look at pictures of other people's models, and I like the opportunity to have my work seen. Otherwise, they would be just objects on a shelf at home. I have been inspired by many on this site and in the magazine. The thought that my meager efforts could inspire others is beyond anything I could imagine.
You, or anyone else, is perfectly welcome to post any pic you want in any of my topics. I will be flattered, not offended.

By the way, stinger, I would hardly refer to your Dornier as a "disaster." I would be proud to have such a model on my shelf.

The Dornier (this model) has a story behind it that incorporates every modelers nightmare! I'll share the saga with you when (or if) it ever gets finished!

Jason - the only pic I've found of a Bf 109T is the box art from MPM's 1/48 kit :

If this plane served with NJG 101, and by looking at the box art, the colors appear to be RLM 74 graygreen & RLM 75 grayviolet over RLM 76 light blue, with disruptive RLM 76 "squiggles" on the topside. NJG101 was a nightfighter unit, and the pics of their aircraft that I've seen were painted in these colors, with & without the topside RLM 76.

I did some more painting today. The Me 262 will receive an RLM 83 overspray on the fuselage after the decals have been applied. I really like this scheme. Its VERY different.

I finished the touch-up on the Ta 152 today, painting the scallop on the wing leading edges. The entire leading edge was painted with the topside camo, wrapping around to the bottom. Then, today, I painted the wavy pattern with the underside color, and finishing with cleaning up with the topside colors. It was a bit of work, but I really didn't want a hard-edge mask there. I'm more comfortable painting it freehand than using a "lifted" mask or silly putty.

Now its time to get some rest !

Looking really great Pix. The cammo came out great on the Ta. I think you made the right choice not using a mask. What about the other bird?

Thanks, Madda. Of the four birds, only the Ju 87 had its camo masked. The other three are all freehand. (Well, I did mask the canopies, wheel wells & gun bay)
