Incredible! I knew a 707 had done a barrel roll, but I was unaware that that was this plane. Big Smile [:D]

I saw the 707 prototype out at Boeing Field in Seattle (Sea-Tac) back in '92. This is the one that did the barrel roll over the boating regatta. Finally saw film footage of this on Discovery Wings in one of their Touched by History moments. The speaker was the test pilots son who was 12 at the time. Would have loved to have seen that in real life.

Quick answers to a few of the questions:

Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy was/is the man who gave the largest donation to the new wing of the NASM. As I understand it, he's an immigrant to the US and a self-made millionaire.

You can get really close to the planes, but they are more than a couple of arms-reaches away. In a lot of ways, you can get closer than at the main museum downtown, but not as close as you can at an air show. On the other hand, the chance of seeing many of those planes at an air show is pretty slim.

I have another 18 or so pictures I'll be posting this weekend.

It's much bigger than the downtown museum. The U-H center is located out by Dulles Airport. The other major difference that I noticed is that the exhibits at the downtown museum tend to have tighter themes and a lot more to read.

Yup, it's a Regulus, and I don't think I have any better pictures. Sad [:(]

It's definitely worth a visit if you can get out there. They'll be adding even more planes as time goes on.

The Silver Hill facility is closed to public tours now (as of March of last year). I got to tour it in December of 2002 and had a great time. Most (if not all) of the artifacts at Silver Hill will be transferred to the U-H Center. There were a fair number of things we saw at Silver Hill that haven't made it over yet.

Wow! Very nice! I like the pics of the Hellcat and Corsair especially. That P-38 looks like it needs some work though. Someday I want to go to the NASM and the new Udvar-Hazy Center (and Silver Hill- I almost forgot!). It looks like you could spend a lot of time there.

That's a BD-5B. That particular plane is prop driven, but there was a jet version--the BD-7, I believe.

The pic of the small jet top row second in from the left. It looks like the one I saw at an air show at NAS Oceana. It was the worlds smallest jet. I have signed pic from the pilot I will have to dig it up and see if it's the same aircraft.

Crikey, there's a ton of stuff there that they haven't pulled out in ages. I hope I can get down to that area again, I'd like to see the Enterprise the Apollo CM and the ASAT. Since they're planning on eventually expanding to 200 aircraft I wonder if the Niagara Aerospace Museum is gonna lose it's P-39. (On loan from NASM) Would be a shame... Sad [:(]
