A pair of steeds
Posted by Swanny on Sunday, January 25, 2004 1:02 PM
Really was feeling the urge to do something different for a little while so hauled out this old Renwal 1/48 scale Mercedes 540-K. A very neat kit...

It includes over 130 pieces, plastic molded in red, white, black, chromed and clear, metal axels and locking rings to secure the wheeles to the axels. Took about eight hours of build time and is brush coated with Future floor finish.

What do you think? From one exciting ride to another?
I have not forgotten the Marauder either, the silver has been painted on the leading edges and I shall begin to apply salt crystals to it tonight.

Wanted to say thanks to everybody for the anniversary wishes last Friday too, my wife thought that was really neat.

Yes I did paint it, the body was molded in white. The red sprue was for tail lights. Funny thing is there was only one red piece (a single brake light) on the model if you built it by the directions. The lid is not Futured but sprayed with Tamiya flat black and left flat for effect. When Revell acquired Renwal they reissued this kit under their name with the body cast in red.

Pretty snazzy auto there, Swanny !
Man, I remember those old Renwall kits. Don't know how many times I built the Geo. Washington sub (interior, spring loaded missiles). I don't remember the cars, though.
Let us know how the "salt technique" goes on the '26.

Swanny, they all look great! Is the Marauder masked with Bare Metal Foil?
If so, does it really do as good a job as I've heard?

I generally use masking tape or Black Magic masks but in this case I used some BMF on the lower half of the nose because the surface detail was so soft. The rest of it is masking tape. It does allow you to pick out softer detail but you need a steady hand with the razor knife.

Shrikes, don't be silly, of course there's Future on the Benze.
Salt is on, heading for first coat of paint today ...

I've decided to write a tutorial on this salting thing and how to wash raised panel lines so that will be coming out in the next week or two also.

Hey Salty Dog, how about a salty B-26B?
Here she is with the salt removed, still needs a little touch-up and I might have gone a little overboard in a few spots but I think it's starting to look pretty cool.

What do you guys think?

Swanny I don't think you went overbored on the salt. I have a color book of 9th air force Marauders that were pretty worn. Great job JOHN

Looking forward to the salting tutorial as well.

Hmmm... salt... model... cat... I see a couple of variables that may cancel each other out given the current environmental conditions... gonna have to do something about that last extraneous variable. Might have to use bitter apple as a sealer.Big Smile [:D]

Sorry Masu, it is not the Revell but is the ESCI 1/48, a much more detailed kit and a little more accurate on the shape too. If you can find one of these they usually run around $50.00 US at collectors tables.
Here is an excellent review of the Revell kit ... http://m2reviews.cnsi.net/reviews/allies/us/kolb26.htm
