AZ Models 1/72 Mig 17PF WIP
Posted by KJ200 on Thursday, July 14, 2011 3:25 PM

For my 4th Mig in succession, I thought I'd pick up AZ Models new Mig 17PF, as I like the look of the 17 with the little radar blister above the intake, and the bullet within.

I did consider Bialek's Mig 17, but figured it had raised panel lines, and so this one had to be better with engraved panels.

That may have been a vain hope, we shall see.

First the obligatory pic of the box art.

And like a latter day Matchbox kit the camo schemes are on the back of the box.

I'm expecting to do another NMF Mig, probably in Soviet markings, but there's always the Syrian camo'd option to fall back on if all goes south.

The pit and the bang seat are pretty good, with just a touch of filler needed on the corners of the seat.

The wings just glued together, and before clean up....

..but what's this?

The blue lines are the panel lines, while the white lines are the joins between the upper and lower wing halves.

Quite why they couldn't just put the joint lines on a panel line is beyond me, so no option but to break out the putty and the scriber.

Thanks for posting this. Doesn't look to bad on the detail side. have to agree about the joint lines, someone didn't think about that. And just checked hannants and seems AZ do a few MiG 17 kits.

As i mentioned on the other thread, last year i built the Bilek MiG 19, and that does have recessed panel lines. So there 17 might well have had them as well.

Karl, not a big 1/72nd scale guy myself but this looks like a really nice kit.

I'll second that is some strange engineering for the panel lines on the bottom of the wings. I mean filling the seam lines and then having to scribe the panel lines back in? Huh!?! Tongue Tied

The pit is coming along nicely, with both the cockpit & bang seat painted up.

I've added tape belts to the seat, and everything is glossed ready for an oil wash.

I'm not going overboard on the detail in the pit, as it sits low in the fuselage, and so little can be seen.

One of the biggest omissions on this kit has to be the lack of intake ducting behind the nose intake, which means that you can see the cockpit interior!

Having sorted through the spares box I dug out the front undercarriage fairing insert from a 21st Century Toys Stuka, which was duly stuck to a circle of card cut to the same diameter as the Mig's fuselage. I then added the front nose gear bay.

After lashings of Tamiya filler and a bit of paint.

Shown also is the resin intake after being separated from the pour stub.

Next step is the oil wash, after which I can close the fuselage up.

Nice job on the intake, thats coming along nicely. Is this the same kit as the completed one you posted a pic of with the MiG 27, or one of their other Mig 17's

Bish, that was Airfix's Mig 15.

Till I bought this kit I had no idea how similar the 15 & the 17 were.

Bang Head I miss read your final line on the first post on that thread. Where you put next up the MiG 17, i read it as the MiG 27 being next to the MiG 17.

How did you find that Airfix kit. I am also after a MiG 15, and have been waiting on the Eduard kits. But after contacting them a couple of weeks ago, its going to be a bit of a wait. And i have heard the new Aifix kit isn't bad.

Bish, the Airfix 15 is a great little kit.

The panel lines are are a bit on the large side, but with a little sanding they look fine.

I'm looking forward to the Eduard 15 when it arrives, but it has been promised for a while now, and the Airfix offering is pretty good.

The decals are also excellent, with 3 interesting colour schemes on offer.

I had heard that about the panel lines. I think i might still hold out for the eduard.

Hannants has had them on their future releases list for over a year. When i contacted eduard they told me one kit, can't recall which one, will be out at the end of this year/early next. The rest will be the end of next year, possably 2013.

I'll probably pick one up when they come out, as I do like the little Mig, but there is now way I could have waited until next year having read Osprey's Mig Aces of the Korean War.

It's taken a little longer than I thought to post another update!

I blame it on being on holiday for 10 days in Dorset.

Anyway, since my last post I've made a fair bit of progress..

The homebuilt splitter went in OK, as did the pit, with a bit of Blutack for ballast.

As noted previously the fit of the wings was not great either with the upper and lower sections, or their attachment to the fuselage.

Note the amount of filler!

...I got the fuselage together without any major need for filler, just a touch of Mr Surfacer here and there.

I also drilled locating holes for the rear stabs.

This added some strength to the butt joints once the brass wire was inserted.

The fit of the wings to the fuselage was poor, and I ended up cutting off the mounting tabs and sanding the wing flush.

Even so I ended up with a fairly decent fit on top, but with the need to insert strip styrene into the lower joints.

Once everything was together and re-scribed, time for a guide coat of flat black to show any imperfections, and there were lots, which I then had to go back and correct.

The canopy took a fair bit of work with Mr Surfacer to fair it in, and more annoyingly the forward section cracked as I masked it up!

Once I was happy everything was as good as I was going to get it, time for a coat of gloss black.

This was polished to remove any obvious imperfections, then a coat of Tamiya Metallic Grey applied.

This was then masked ready for a coat of Tamiya Chrome Silver. As usual I used two shades of metallic to create some contrast in the final paint finish.

Since those photos were taken the model has been decalled and a wash applied.

Hopefully I'll get to post some more pics tomorrow night.

Karl

Nice job, i like the pit. Is there any AM there or is that all from the kit. Not sure if you mentioned that in an earlier post.

I really might consider one of there's as there don't seem to be many other MiG 17's about.

The wing fit was so poor on my kit (I believe mine is an F kit, not a PF) that I put it back in the box and it will probably stay that way for quite some time.  Why a major manufacturer has not come out with a non-PF Mig-17 in 1/72 scale I'll never know.  I've never seen the Dragon kit anywhere, but I know one exists.....

Bish, the pit is OOB with tape belts added only if memory serves.

Detail is a bit soft but in 1/72 not the end of the world.

aagranata, with a bit of luck Trumpy will do a 17, as their 19 is imminent, though if Airfix did one I woudn't mind as their 15 was a great little build.

That pit certainly looks better than i would have expected. But i am in no rush for a MiG 17 so think i will wait and see what comes along.
