Anyone build the Academy F/A-18C Hornet 1/32

According to The Squadron, this is the 2004 kit of the year. I'm not exactly sure who makes that decision.

The picture looks great then you look inside and find out it costs $125. Also says that there is a lot of detail.

Is this model worth the cost? If you built it how was your experience/degree of difficulty. Anything else of interest?

Thanks, Mark

I just got one at Hobby Lobby with my 50% off coupon... $62 out the door.

I don't know about being worth the $114 they were asking for it, but it is WELL worth the $62 I paid. Truly awesome kit. I didn't really believe some of the hype till I opened the box. It's big and it's GOOD.

I finished the kit a couple of months back. Man, it's packed with detail. To me, it's the best 1/32 kit I've built so far. There are a couple of tricky steps in the build, but if you take it slow and easy and read through all the steps, it's a pure joy to complete. Now whether or not it's worth $125 out of pocket,.....I'm still debating that.

Thanks to both of you for your input.

Spending $120 right now is not in the budget.

Hey Mark-66,

I've seen a couple of guys over on www.aircraftresourcecenter.com selling there hornets for around 80 - 85 bucks. Don't know if that's closer to your budget, but it's at least 1/3 lower on the cost.

Just thought I'd let you know.

In my opinion no kit is worth $120. But I still buy 'em anyway!

If you have friends having a vocation in Asia, ask them to buy it for you. It only cost around P. 3000.00 pesos (aprox. $54) here in PH

You can get 'em cheap in Japan, too. Not 50 bucks cheap, but around 60-70 bucks, anyway.
From what I've seen in the box, it is certainly an amazing kit.
Definitely on the shopping list!

Yep, wait until your local Hobby Lobby has another 50% off sale. That's the best way to get it. I have the kit, and it's about half done right now. I thought that I'd play it smart, and build ALL of the ordnance first, including painting & decaling it all. Took me over a MONTH to finish that stuff!! There's a LOT of ordnance in that kit. Supposedly, about half the plastic is just the ordnance. The landing gear, including the rubber tires, but not the gear doors, is 75 pieces! But it all goes together very well. A well-engineered kit.

But, I have to agree with the other guys: No kit is worth over $100. I only paid $80 for my Hornet (I didn't know Hobby Lobby had them at the time). And even then, that's still too expensive for a bunch of plastic (but I just HAD to HAVE it!!Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D])
