Thanks Gary!

I almost bought the Tamiya 1/32 F-15E from Hobbyland but even the sale price was "out " of the budget. It's the wife's Birthday next week and I need to "splurge" a little since Christmas was a bit sparse for her. Don't think she wants a F-15! I did get her to buy me the 1/32 F/A-18C for Fathers Day. 50% off at Hobby Lobby of course. Love those guys! I'll have to find a host site for pictures since we have a digital camera now. I haven't tried it out on any close ups yet. Need to experiment a little. Too many things, not enough time! Well, need to make an Aircraft Log Book for the case between the pilots seats I just made. Later!

melgyver,

I know what you mean about not finishing stuff. I started on my marriage almost 21 years ago, and I STILL ain't finished!!! Laugh [(-D]Big Smile [:D] I do have a 1/32 Tamiya F-15E & a 1/32 Academy F/A-18C still in the works. The F-15E has been in-progress since Feb 2001, and I started on the Hornet back in late September 2003.

Just keep on modeling, and, eventually, you'll get it all done. Good luck!!

Gary,

PLEASE DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH! I'm notorious for starting stuff and not finishing! I was just doing a bit of research since Trumpeter brought out the 1/32 Corsairs and I was noticing I still didn't have Hasegawa's AU-1. I finally started back on working on a 1/35 UH-1C I started several years ago. I end up trying to put too much detail and get burned out. Who knows? This might be the year I finish something!

Phil,

I had forgotten about the "2nd" In Action Book # 1145 and found the picture you probably were refering to on page 53. I concede! It's is obvious in the head on shot the bulge is right at the front cowling support ring. You can also tell in the photo above by the "shine" on the cowl. Thanks! I'll get the 1/48 Hasegawa AU-1 as soon as Hobby Lobby stocks them and I can catch a sale!

In the IN ACTION book on the Corsair, there's a production line photo of AU-1's. The cowl is positively pear-shaped. Hasegawa got that part right.

According to "Detail and Scale," the -5 and AU-1 had the same cowls, but the AU-1 scoops weren't open. There are no accurate models of either craft in 1/72'd scale, but in 1/48th, Has. and Monogram are both fairly good.

My favorite birds! Good luck.

Anyone out there been "up close" and "personal" with an actual AU-1 Corsair at a Museum or otherswise. I have an old Heller kit (know about the wing problems and others) and have yet to get the Hasegawa kit. I looked a buddy of mine's Hasegawa kit and I just don't think the cowling should retain so much of the bulge of the F4U-5 side air intakes. Almost all pictures I have found don't show a good shot of this area, but you can plainly see by numbers on one cowl their isn't a bulge along side the cowl all the way back to the cowl flaps. I am thinking the Corsair at Mobile Battleship Parkway was labeled as a F4U-7, but may have had a AU-1 cowl. It's been several years, but didn't look right to me at the time. I don't know if Pensacola has an AU-1 or not. I'll be in Ft. Walton in Oct. so may have to pass by and check both Museums out. Detail & Scale shows the "cheeks" in a line drawing, but had pictures of a AU-1 engine without the side cowling on. I think the only common lines of the cowl should be at the front edge of the cowl flaps not the whole length of the cowling to the front ring behind the nose piece. It should have more of a circular look from the front.
