Engine turned metal for Spirit of St. Louis
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 29, 2004 3:38 PM
Hey.............
I Just got Testor's 1/72 scale Spirit of St. Louis. Does anyone have any decals that simulate the engine turned aluminum on the nose and prop spinner? I've done some looking on the Web with no luck so far. And it may be difficult or even impossible to do in 1/72. I don't know.
Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Not impossible at all:
1. Apply Bare Metalâ„¢ or similar foil to the area.
2. Use a pencil eraser "sharpened" until the end is about 1/16" or 1.5mm in diameter
3. "Twirl" the eraser on the foil to create a circular swirl.
4. Move the eraser about 1/32" and twirl in another circle.
5. Repeat by moving in even rows until the surface is "machine turned"
Its really not as time consuming as it sounds. You could probably do the entire front of "Spirit" in a single sitting.
