Great looking model of a great looking plane! Heart The figures look great too, nice way to set off the size of the Avenger, I never knew what a honkin' huge aircraft she was till I saw one in person. And love the grey wash on the panel lines, I did one recently and the results weren't really what I wanted. Very sharp work!

I used Model Master Acryl Sand as the base coat.  I then use a series of filters until I got the look and the shadows to my liking.  Tamiya suggest Deck Tan, but that didn't look quite right to me.

I would say mostly the same.  The hardest thing was canopy.  I've done the tape thing before but I wasn't about to try it on this kit; not with all of those frames.  I bought Eduard's mask.  They went on great and were worth every penny.  The mask that came with the kit were a little off.

I like it!  Nice to see an airplane relatively clean.  As everyone else said, nice job painting the figures.   Thanks for posting.

Looks very good to me, and a question what color tan did you use for the pilots uniforms?.

Nicely done, Leatherneck!  I especially like your figures, too, I grew up on Monogram and Revell, and I like to see them, to help give a sense of scale.  I think you did a great job on them,

With your third aircraft build under your belt, would you say that many of the techniques are the same as those you use in building armor?  I ask, because I believe a good modeler should be able to build any kit from any genre, preferences notwithstanding.

Best regards,

I like that you did a Flight 19 tribute build, and the understated weather came off quite well. I think the base really adds to it. I also did a Flight 19 build and chose plane No. 3, Ensign Bossi's, simply because it was easier to gather together 3's in 1/144 scale. It's funny how our minds were thinking along the same lines. I titled mine "The Final Run-Up":

Wow! Excellent work! I really like the figures! I also like to hear that it was built OOB- it looks great without all the AM stuff.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

The figures are from Tamiya's World War II Navy Pilots and Moto Tug kit.  The figures are ok but soft in detail especially in the face.

Another thing I tried on this kit is using a grey wash on the panels lines.  I'm used to using a dark wash to help bring out detail.  I noticed on a lot of pics of the dark blue Avengers that the panel lines look grey.  So I went with that.

The ball turret was a real bear.  I read somewhere else, that a builder installed the turret before glueing the fuselage halfs together.  I would recommend that to anyone trying to build this kit.

Flight 19 is an interesting story if you ignore the whole Bermuda Triangle/Alien views on it.

Flight 19 was a training flight of Avengers that took off from Ft Lauderdale NAS in Dec 1945 and disappeared without  a trace. All 5 aircraft and their crews were lost along with a PBM Search and Rescue bird sent to look for them when they were reported overdue. It is one of the more well known losses in the "Bermuda Triangle" area.

BTW, a VERY nice build and tribute Yes

Very nice looking build.  Is there a special significance to the title and list of crew members?

Paul

Check out the move "Close Encounters of a Third Kind" by Steven Spielberg, from the 1970s.

Or google Flight 19

Accurate Miniatures Avenger - finished
Posted by usmc1371 on Monday, October 24, 2011 4:06 PM

Well, I've just finished my Avenger.  I built it OOB except the seat belts.  I scratchbuilt those.  The markings are from the infamous Flight 19.  This is my third aircraft model as I usually do armor.  This model had some firsts for me.  It was the first time I painted 1/48th scale figures.  Also was the first time I scratchbuilt a tarmac.  And, this was the first time I used a picture frame for the diorama base.
