It's finally done
Posted by benzdoc on Saturday, January 31, 2004 10:26 AM
Hi guys,

Well, recently I just finished my first airplane model in about 20 years. I justs wanted to share a couple of pics. I know it has alot of problems, but at least it's on the "finished" shelf rather than the "other" shelf! I think My next project is going to have a more simple paint job.

Here are a couple of pics (sorry for the quality)

Many of the tips and techniques I used on that model, I learned here. So thank you all for your advice! I still have a long way to go though....

Well done, Benzdoc, first attempt or otherwise. What scale is the kit? Did you use a frisket for the splotches?

Impressive, I've had a similiar sized 'break' myself.........

I've also considered a 109 for the near future, but felt a little apprehensive because of the complex camouflage, but you've done a real good job!

Like some of the chaps above, I'd love to know how your camo was achieved.....?

I think you did a very nice job. Good job on panel line definition, nice exhaust staining, don't see any decal silvering going on. Choice of colors looks fairly accurate, camo pattern looks good. Looks like something you should be proud to display. I have to assume you are apologizing for the quality of the pictures (but they are not that bad either) and not the model.

Hey Benz,
Sweet lookin 109. First a/c model you say in about 20yrs? I too was wondering how did you do the mottles?
Over all build is very nice.
BTW are you a docotor that does check ups on benzs?
Flaps up, Mike

I'd say your are very well on your way, if not already there!

Great looking model for your first in some time.

I was also struck by the realism of the mottling. Especially the irregularity of it just under the cockpit. Very realistic! Nice weathering, too.

Be sure to post a pic of your future models.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your commendation. Especially considering who it's coming from. You guys are the best, and the fact that you appreciate my work just puts me over the moon.

A few of you asked about the mottle. Eventually my goal is to do it freehand, but for the first attempt I used a bunch of different masks. Tamiya included a 1/48 scale drawing of the top and sides showing only the mottle. So, with many baby steps, I made copies of the drawing, and then chose a small part to mottle. I used a number 11 blade to cut out the mottle in the area I was working. Then to keep the paper mask off of the surface, (for the soft edge) I cut very, very thin strips of tape and put them on the underside of the mask, in order to lift it off the surface slightly. But it took a lot of paitence. I must have cut a hundred slivers of 3M fineline tape. The wings took four partial masks each, the fuselage five or six, and so on. The sand yellow to light blue demarcation was done freehand - over and over again! To the point I was fighting paint thickness a little bit at the end.

And, a couple of members had asked about my username. I'm not very creative, but it came from the fact that I used to work in a body shop, mostly on Mercedes. But now I work for Mercedes-Benz USA as a collision repair instructor. So, I kind of meant that literally.

Again, thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement. I was a little nervous about posting them, but I see that we are all truly among friends!
