A-1H Skyraider wing root
Posted by MikeV on Saturday, January 31, 2004 8:45 PM
Does anyone have a link to a close-up photo of how the wing and fuselage meet on the A-1H Skyraider? I am filling the seam and want to see how it should look.

Thanks

Mike

Hey Mike, check these out....this is a Skyraider that I put some avionics in....it was one of the planes in the movie We Were Soldiers also. The plane is off around the country right now doing airshows, so I hope these will be what you need as I can't take any new photos for a few months. I do have some more side profiles, and great cockpit pics if you need 'em...let me know.

check out those exhaust stains!!!

That's me holding the prop.....if you notice my shorts are extremely dirty from rubbing on the side of the fuselage while reaching into the cockpit!!!

Hope this helps friend!!!!!

Heath,

Nice pictures! Love those Spads! Hard to beat the shots of them in "Flight of the Intruder". I enjoyed "We were Soldiers". I was a Huey Crew Chief. One of my buddies from the 174th is friends with "Too Tall" Ed Freeman. He was awared the CMO shortly after the movie was released. If it's a raidal and it's not leaking oil, you are out of oil!

Clear Left!

Thanks Heath, I appreciate it buddy.

I noticed that Skyraider was off the Oriskany huh?
My older brother was on the Oriskany back in '69 or '70, I fogot which.
He said the Oriskany had several fires on it during it's lifetime and they affectionately called it the "U.S.S. Zippo." Laugh [(-D]
It was sitting up here in the bay in the mothball fleet and was supposed to be sold for scrap. I wonder what happened to it?

MikeV: From the local Texas paper
------------------------------------------------------------

By Matthew Sturdevant Caller-Times
January 9, 2004

An 888-foot Korean War-era aircraft carrier will arrive at the Port of
Corpus Christi next week to have its innards cleaned of solvents before
the ship is sunk offshore to create an artificial reef.

Officials haven't announced yet where the ship will be sunk.

The USS Oriskany will be towed Tuesday from Beaumont and will arrive
later in the week at the Port of Corpus Christi, said Denise Johnston,
manager of government contracts for Resolve Marine Services. The company is
one of two contracted to clean aircraft carriers.

"The tow will commence depending on weather conditions," Johnston said.
"It could be in Corpus Christi on the 15th, the 16th, the 17th - it
depends on the weather."

Resolve Marine Services of Florida, and a Brownsville company, Esco
Marine, were jointly awarded a $2.18 million U.S. Navy contract to remove
oily solvents from hundreds of tanks and bilge compartments on the ship,
according to federal contract information.

Cleaning the Oriskany is expensive because the ship has chemicals and
substances that are regulated by the federal government for special
disposal, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, mercury and asbestos, Johnston
has said.

The Navy and U.S. Maritime Administration are evaluating applications
from five states for four sites - three in the Gulf of Mexico and one off
the Atlantic coast - and will decide later this month or in February where
it will be sunk.

The Oriskany is the last of the Essex Class carriers, the same type as
Corpus Christi's museum ship, the Lexington. The Oriskany was used during
the Korean and Vietnam wars from 1950 to 1976. It will be the largest ship
deliberately sunk as an artificial reef, according to the Maritime
Administration."

I heard that Heath.
I copied and pasted that story and sent it to my brother in an email and he said it was a shame that they were sinking the "big O" like that.
There is a famous eating place in Jack London Square in Oakland, CA called "The Spaghetti Factory" and on the corner of the parking lot entrance there is a big ship anchor. Several years back when we were there I took a closer look at that anchor and much to my surprise the plaque on it said the anchor was from the U.S.S. Oriskany. Small world eh?
I am fortunate that the U.S.S Hornet is docked about 15 miles away from me at Alameda as it has a LOT of history behind it. They were going to scrap it too until they raised enough money to make it into a floating museum.

Hey Heath,

I posted a link to a Skyraider photo reference web site and just found these pictures on there: http://skyraider.org/skyassn/memberpics/yblood/yblood606.htm

This is the same plane you worked on isn't it?
It is in Santa Monica according to the web site.

HEY Mike, that is the same one!!!! If you look on the previous page, it shows that Serial Number no longer at Santa Monica Museum. And the photos were taken in '96. For a minute there I thought I was going to crazy, 'cause I just did that install about 6 months ago!!! Now it is owned by a private owner who is affectionately called "Skyraider Bob". He also owns a T-28, and a Stearman!!! Thanks for the link, after he gets back from touring the Skyraider around the country, I'll have to get the full scoop!!! It is now "stationed" at Ramona Airport. Good eyes, buddy!!! LOLTongue [:P]

Heath,

What gave it away was the "USS Oriskany" on the side which we already discussed. Wink [;)]
