REVELL ANNOUNCES NEW 1/48 PB4Y-2!?!?!
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Monday, February 20, 2012 8:26 AM

No, no.. Not really... I just wanted y'all's attention for a minute..

I keep seeing talk about a re-tooled 1/48th B-17, a new B-17, a B-17 other than Monogram or Revell's, etc, etc, etc...

Here's the questions..

What would you REALLY rather see in the LHS? A  new 1/48th B-17F/G or a PB4Y-2? (Can't pick both)

What would you pay for the PB4Y-2?

A: 30.00-50.00

B: 51.00-70.00

C: 71.00-100.00

D: Money is no object.

The B-17?

A: 30.00-50.00

B: 51.00-70.00

C: 71.00-100.00

D: Money is no object.

My answers:

1: PB4Y-2

2: B

2: A, or I'll stick with Revell/Monogram

Gotta with the same answers. Got 2 B-17s in the stash, and the PB4Y-2 is just ugly enough to be cool!

Although I would go to price B, I think it would come in in the A range.

I recently traded the 1/48 B-17 in my stash cuz the 1/72 Pro Modeller version makes the 1/48 look like a vintage toy.

Would go with a retooled 1/48 B-17 in a heart beat. Price I would go with B although it wouldn't be an object if is more.

On a 2nd thought, I'd take two B-17s.

B-17 would sell more. But if they were to retool the B-24, a PB4Y wouldn't seem as far-fetched.

What would I pay for the PB4Y-2?  My answer would be "A" but no more than $35 (after tax).

All in all though, if the PB4Y-2 was placed right next to a B-17 and they were both in the same "A" price range, I'd still pick the B-17.

Regardless, I'd only go with either one SO LONG AS they were both Monogram.  I know that the instant either of those two planes come out with some other manufacturer's name on it, those kits will cost a minimum of four times more the Monogram kits.  And they'll have recessed panel lines, too.

I would buy it, since I really want to have at least each aircraft used or build during WW2.
price would be depending on what brand would release it.

About the B-17, I would first want to know what good it is before I would pay anything for it

But I really prefer the PB4Y above the B-17, since we're allready able to buy the B-17.

Hmmm, that's a real head scratcher!

Yeah, I want a new tooled B-17F/G, look at my username! I'd pronbably go somewhere in the $50-$70 range for it too. I'd really honestly love to see revell do it over anyone else. Although I'm very curious to see what tamiya would do with it. And I would say too that it would be a very smart idea to make a versatile kit, meaning that it would be able to be modified to differant variants with parts from the box.

Dont get me wrong, I really like the combo that exists now of the revell F and monogram G. There is a lot of versatility when kitbashing between the 2 kits. And damn fine models can be built from either kit as they are. I just want to see what could be done with a brand new kit.

I build in 48th only, started doing this along time ago, mainly because of all the bombers revellogram had. All the 72nd scale forts just look funny to me, they dont look right. So I stay away from them. And honestly, the B-17 is the only plane that I am this anal with. With pretty much everything else, close enough is good enough for me because I dont have as much knowledge on them.

The PB4Y is a cool looking plane, just not really my thing.

I'm with you Hans, been wanting a 1/48 Privateer for a long time. For now, I'll just finish my PB4Y-1 conversion from the good old Monogram B-24J. Using an "Attic" resin nose turret w/ lots of scratchbuilding. I'll finish it someday.....

It's like a B-25 with jet engines. How can you not love that?

No it is not. Good subject though.

I still haven't built my 1/72 Matchbox Priv with Cobra resin upgoodies. It is molded in three colors however.

I'm still waiting on the 1/48 B-307!

But I would buy both! Love the B-17, but can't resist multi-engined prop planes, so both. Would even buy a retooled B-17, but still would buy the Revell.

Shoot, even got the Koster conversion kit for the PB4Y-2

Can't fault ya on the B-307, lol.. It's the only airliner-kit I'd ever build..

But I'm thinking that Revell/Monogram could pull off an injection-molded (with figures) PB4Y-2, even if the kit went for (almost) as much as the B-29 does... I'd LOVE it if they'd re-tool for a PB4Y-1 too, and I really don't understand why they haven't...  Maybe they're testing the waters and seeing if the release of the PV-1kit takes off (no pun intended) will result in enough sales to justify a new, 1/48th scale  "Blue Bomber" kit...

While we're on the subject of big bombers...read on another forum this morning that the 1/32 H-K B-25J is shipping March 20th, with the gun-nose hitting a month-ish later, and the ridonkulous 1/32 B-17 dropping this summer...

Looks like 1/48 is being bracketed by new-mold Forts in the other scales, who knows, I'd be shocked if one doesn't hit 48th within the next three years.

And if the same happens to the Liberator, who knows, a PB4Y may happen, or Revell might be forced to action.

Even though the B-45 ain't no B-25 with jets, I still love that one to in 1/48.
Was one of the first flyers that wasn't WWII which caught my attention...
They've got to many planes which they should make in 1/48..

I personally would want to have a H8K Emily in 1/48
I wouldn't care how big that one would be, I would make some room for that one!

B-17!!!!!!! But in the second price range, if there going to retool it might as well be nice enough for the higher prices

Seems as if the Privateer isn't as popular as the the Fort, with folks willing to pay two or three times the typical Monogram price for one that's "better"...

So... Tell me about the PB4Y-1 conversion kit.. Price and availabilty?

I'd go for the PB4Y before another B-17. I don't see why we need another B-17 when there are two models available that are just fine. Though I would like to see an early B-17D.

There are lots of aircraft that we have no kits for. How about a 1/48 Ki-21 Sally.  How about a 1/48  EB-66 or an A-3 Skywarrior? I'd love to see a Revell 1/48 F3D Skynight.

Sometimes the plastic model industry reminds me of the movie industry. Same old ideas rehashed. Copy something that's been done before. Nothing new. No imagination.

I truly agree that the Monogram B-17G and Revell F are old kits, but for the guy that wants a good B-17 in 1/48th, either kit's a gem, with the Monogram kit "better" in terms of details and the inclusion of figures...

I just don't see a big market for a 100.00-plus 1/48 B-17G... And let's face it, that's the deal we'll get from any other manufacturer... (Probably way more than that, given the price-tag on the Great Wall P-61...  )

So, out of all you guys that prefer the Fort over the Privateer, let's say that a new Fort will never happen, just for the sake of arguement and say that the PB4Y-2 is going to happen...

Would you buy one, and would you buy one that only met Monogram's 1990s, PBY-5A level of detail (so that they can bring it in for under 45-50.00 a copy)? Oh, by "level of detail", I mean raised lines, no PE parts, an instruction sheet that is only about 6-8 pages, and includes about a half-dozen figures (both ground and airborne)...

And let's go even further... What would say about a 1/48 P2B-2 (Navy B-29) or Martin PBM Mariner?

"Conversion:  PB4Y-2 Privateer from monogram B-24Jor D. 69 vac formed ( including 17 clear), 30 cast metal, 48 resin, decals for 5 aircraft, & instructions. $49.95"       Quoted from Bill Kosters order sheet that he sends with every order. Got this one bout 3 weeks ago.

That P2B-2 is sweet. But oh man, I would love to see more flying boats. A 1/48 Mariner would rock, as would an H8K Emily as Ninetalis mentioned earlier, or my long wish - a  1/48 HU-16 Albatross with Coast Guard decals. Boy what a beautiful model that would make.

How about a Martin or Boeing China Clipper? Or a Dornier DO-X? Those are pretty important aircraft historically.

Definitely not the same ol' same ol' subjects that every manufacturer copies from every other.

None of the above, really...I've acquired a whole bunch of 1/72 B-24 D's (AKA PB4Y-1)-like 3 of 'em, the Academy/Minicraft PB4-1 (ERCO bow turret), 2 conversion kits for the Liberator GR MK V, two Revell PB4Y-2's, a Cobra Company Update set for the Revell kits, lots of Squadron canopies, Scale Aircraft Conversions landing gear, decals, Vector engines (LOTS OF ENGINES), Eduard "Big Ed"photoetch sets (LOTS OF 'EM), Bomb bay doors, etc. With my limited display space it makes lots more sense to do them in 1/72. Add in the PB1-W, the PB-2S, Stoofs, Neptunes, Orions, Venturas, Harpoons, etc and you'll see why I'm running out of room.

I don't recall any threads about Hans being shut down by the mods here. He was never a problem. It was threads about that other German he who shall not be named that were axed after his banishment.
