First off the "Production Line"
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 5, 2004 1:29 PM
The first of my four Luftwaffe birds that I have completed is the 1/48 Shanghai Dragon FW 190A-8 in Joseph "Pips" Priller's markings. He and his wingman were the only Luftwaffe aircraft over the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

The kit was built with a small Eduard PE set. The pitot, landing gear indicators, and rear ventral antenna are wire. It was painted freehand with Model Master enamels, with the rudder & undercowl RLM 04 (yellow) being Aircraft Colors (or Color of Eagles) acrylic.

Hope you like it, and thanks for letting me share !

The next one I will finish is the DML Ta 152H-1. It has received its wash & dullcoat, and is awaiting landing gear & assorted "breakable bits." It will probably be done this weekend. The Trimaster Me 262 will follow. Once these are done, I can repair & finish the Hasegawa Ju 87 in winter camo.

Very nice build Pix. How do you accent your panel lines?

Thanks, Captain, eagle, & benzdoc !

eagle - I use an enamel wash over Future. For the control surfaces, I use black. For a multi-color top scheme, I use dark gray. For undersurfaces & single top colors, I mix the base color with black.

Thanks again, all !

A real beauty! I sure envy the detail on those huge 1/48 scale kits (gonna try a me-262 in 1/48 soon).

Hey, nice one Pix..! It's the same markings I applied, over 20 years ago, to the 1/48 Otaki kit. It's also how the FW-190 appears at the Bourget Air Museum, near Paris.

Yours is simply better than mine was though!

Pix, you do great work. I had some fit problems with the lower cowl join when I built one a while back. Do you prefer the DML/Dragon/Trimaster kit over the Tamiya?

Thanks John, Jason, Dan, cassibill, dj, Frank, & Rick !

John - the lineage of this kit is : Trimaster>DML>Dragon>Shanghai Dragon. The kit is available from Great Models Webstore for about $15. There's no PE with this issue, and the kit really benefits from some. Its not an easy build, though. There are LOTS of fit problems.

Rick - I've built quite a few of these kits, and there are some ways to achieve a better fit. I attach the wheel wells only to the back of the lower wing, leaving the front of the wells unglued to the thin parts of the leading edge of the wing. I then glue the wing tope to the completed fuselage. Then, I glue the lower wing in place, leaving the leading edge in front of the wheel wells unglued. The lower piece of the cowl is then used to align the wing tops, bottoms, & wheel wells. The rest of the cowl is then assembled to the fuselage, not as a separate cowl assembly. This leaves a minimum of filling left to do in an area that's hard to sand.

Even with its fit problems, I MUCH prefer this kit over the Tamiya. The Tamiya prop, spinner, landing gear, & tires don't really capture the "look" of an FW 190 to my eyes. Its not so noticable unless you see them side-by-side. (these are bith old builds-notice those yellowed decals !)

Thanks again, all ! Got to get back to work on the Ta 152 now !

Awesome model. Don't you just love the character that plays Pips in "The Longest Day"? Captures the frustration and despair the real Pips must have felt.

Thanks so much, BSquires, saltydog, AJACKETSFAN, Keyworth, & ShamRage !

saltydog - the camera is a Canon Power Shot G2, 4 megapixel. Here's how I do a close-up shot : Zoom all the way in (DON'T use digital zoom), move the camera to fill up the frame with the model, and do a manual focus. If your camera has an f-stop setting (aperture), set it for the highest # (the smallest opening), and adjust the exposure time so that your blacks are true black. Hope this helps.

Keyworth - I'm not afraid of the big, bad Wulf...

ShamRage - I loved Priller's character, laughing in his plane, after saying that the "Luftwaffe has had its moment of glory !" or something like that. Its one of my favorite WW II movies !

Thanks again, everyone !

Dang, Pix! You are truly my hero! That is a fantastic piece of work.
I'm also amazed at how quickly you make these masterpieces.
Thanks for showing me the way, Bro!

Pix,
i am now quite certain that you were at one time the person who made the little identification models used by air forces throughout world war ii. the question i am now contemplating is.... for whom did you build herr pix. I shall mull it over and get back to you.

Hey Pixi;
you'll never cease to amaze me, great job on the DML 190 but, what I'd like you to do is make the old Monogram or Otaki/Arii's Fw-190's look that good, if you do then your a GOD

Many thanks to Brian, obiwan, Karl, falcon, allan, phule, cuda, & fightinjoe !

falcon - there are some fit problems with the wheel well, upper & lower wing, & cowl. I went over the process that I use on one of my replies on the first page of this thread (its kinda lenghty, so I'd rather not re-type it. Check it out-take your time, and it can go well)

phule - I was born 10 years, minus one day, after VJ Day. I am an American (my father was a pilot in WW II & scored 3 victories over German AC), but I LOVE the looks & camo of the Luftwaffe birds. There's just something about them.

cuda - thanks, but I only build the kit because I feel its the most realistic-looking 190, not because its more difficult. I'll leave the "sow's ear conversions" to someone interested in becoming a god.

fightinjoe - don't do that - I'm just as capable of producing a stinker as anyone else ! (plus, I don't want to have to live up to that line with every build !)

Thanks a lot again, everyone. I'm glad you got as much enjoyment looking at her as I had building her !
