Am I done?
Posted by Quagmyre on Friday, February 6, 2004 5:14 PM
Now that I've learned a few things about weathering and detailing from hanging out here. I'm faced with ultimate rhetorical question artists always ask themselves. "Am I Done?"
Accurate Miniatures' TBF-1C Avenger (not George Sr.'s, the older AM kit). This plane was bigger than I thought! I like the gloss finish on these darker models. Was thinking of going with a dullcoat, but I like what I see so far. I like the new look on this one the use of Future has provided, but is it too glossy? I've used Testors Dullcoat 1260 in the past successfully, but was heartbroken to what it did to the metallic finish on my P38. I know I'll have to remask the windows for the application of the dullcoat if I pursue that avenue. A sludge wash to darken the panel lines is rather pointless for the upper panels, but the ship is still at sea about the intermediate blue and white underside panels. Any thoughts/suggestions?

just my humble opinion but i would leave her as she is, after the dullcote that is. maybe a couple of chips on the prop / wing walk area and a little gunblast staining (maybe). anyways thats one sweet looking model there.

I think it looks fine, but only you can say if its what YOU want. Do you like the way it looks? I think that's what's most important.

Looks good to me. If your worried about the shine, maybe you could get some artist pastel chalks, grind up a light color on some sandpaper and using a fan brush lightly brush on paint just to dull the shine some. Just a thought. Not as severe as Dullcote.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words. I have a solution. Gonna use my OS2U-3 Kingfisher as a guinea pig with the dull coat.

If I don't like what I see then a chip here a chip there on the wing walks and props, then the Avenger is on the shelf.

Your Avenger looks fantastic.
I really love the look and feel of the first picture ,
it really does the kit justice.

I like the Kingfisher too. What kit is that by the way?

It's an old Monogram kit. The copyright is 1967 on the plastic, but the issue date on kit itself says it was released in the mid 90s. It was a "High Tech" kit with PE parts.

I'll post the finish products (Avenger and Kingfisher) by the end of the weekend. Next up? Think I'll do Monogram's SB2C Helldiver.

Quagmyre,

My dad was crew chief on Curtiss Helldivers in the Marines during WWII down at El Toro in CA I believe.

Llooks good. Extra weathering probably would'nt add anything but more work. Iplan to start building mine soon and have no intention of stressing out about wear and tear. I like the Kingfisher the way it is. Now watch Tamigawa produce one.Approve [^]

Very nice indeed! I, however, would flat spot the tires and do something about the decal edges. But that is me. Do what appeals to you! That is the bottom line.

I am done.

Took a page out of the latest issue of FSM. Tried using pastels to discolor various panels as a part of the weathering, except I used blues obviously rather than tones of olive drab. I must admit I liked what I saw! Sure beats using multiple tones of one color by mixing paints or throwing more money to buy different shades. I've noticed on a lot of planes the flaps are almost always another tone in color (or at least faded) than the rest of the plane, so that's where I concentrated the most on the fading other than a panel here a panel there as you will see on the Kingfisher. And oh yes. I did add scratches and I did go with the dull coat. Much better.
The photoshoot starts with Penelope...

And of course my favorite gal who always brings good news. "Evangeline the Avenger!"

...and I'm spent!

On a more somber note this may be my last post for quite some time. Just got word from work that there's a 90% chance I'm being transfered to Virginia for a two year assignment I really cannot turn down given the career crippling scene here in Chicago. I must admit I'm excited to get out of the Midwest for a while (and back to civilization Wink [;)]), but sad to be leaving my beautiful fiancé, my beloved Cubbies (especially now that they've got a prayer), and the quarter scale work shop behind. Starting off a marriage long distance is gonna be interesting. Black Eye [B)] I learned a lot from everyone here and truly have been inspired by the work I have seen. Looks like the SB2C Helldiver is gonna have to wait.Sad [:(]

Quagmyre:
Think of the assignment as a challenging new opportunity to see and do things you wouldn't otherwise. I am sure there will be chances to stay connected with your fiancee and family, not to mention checking out Jeff Herne's aviation museum over in Jersey!
