J-Hulk's MiG-29 (pic)
Posted by J-Hulk on Sunday, February 8, 2004 11:08 AM
Scanmania continues!
Here's a pic of Monogram's 1/48 MiG-29 I built while watching CNN in 1990.
I can't recall what colors I used, but the light gray was definitely Testor's Model Master from a rattlecan, and the darker gray camo was applied with a brush.
During that same period I built Revell's "Hunt for Red October" 1/48 F-14 and Monogram's 1/48 F-15C, using the exact same colors as used on this model.
That's why I'm not posting all the pix together!

Anyhoo, here's J-Hulk's 14-year old Fulcrum:

I would appreciate any and all criticisms from the experts!

Hey, Hulk,

What's that big black thing under it? A new IR pod? Neutron Bomb? Ashtray? Heeheeheehee!!! Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

The plane looks great!! Shoot, in 1990, I was getting ready to go to the Persian Gulf (which I eventually did), and wasn't even thinking about models. Good-looking paint job on it.

By the way, I've tried to send you an e-mail via FSM's e-mail address for you, but I haven't received any replies. I have the C-130J picture for you, and just need an e-mail address to send it to. Just let me know where to send it via the e-mail address below. Look forward to hearing from you!!

Howdy, Gary!
I think that large black radome was actually a Kroger's chili bowl...maybe!

You didn't get my replies? I answered at least two! I'm looking forward to seeing that J! I'll click on your signature and see what I get. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words concerning my ol' MiG, folks.
Did ya'll notice the terrible fit between the fuselage and vertical stabilizers? I just did!
Funny what seeing your pix on the net will reveal!

This was the 1/48 Monogram kit, which I've heard is not very accurate. Can anyone shed any light on what in particular is wrong with this kit?

I'm not an expert, but it likes like a Mig29 to me, and that's good enough.

Once again, very nice work Brian. I didn't notice the poor fit on the srabilizers until you mentioned it, you are your hardest critic Brian! I wouldn't be able to pick any inaccuracies either, I'm new to the world of plane modeling and have much to learn.

Even though I'm no modern aircraft fan, I like the camo. The fact that you used a brush is most impressive. I also don't look for what's "wrong" with a kit. If it looks like the real thing, as yours does, I'm happy !

Welcome to the "side of the light," Brian. Your fine work certainly earns you a place in the aircraft forum. Keep posting pics of your planes ! I'm interested to see what else you have !

Thanks, ya'll!

Blue 2, I think the main color was simply Testor's Model Master Light Gray in the spray can, if there is such a beast. The darker gray might be plain ol' Testor's Flat Gray in the bottle.
Are you asking about the dimensions of the model or the real aircraft? That model's in storage back in the States (I live in Japan), and I don't have any Fulcrum references handy, so I can't help you out with either right now!

Wade, you're right, I'm my worst critic! Even 14 years after the build, I'm still finding problems with it.
Actually, at the time, I thought it was perfect. Funny, that!

Good philosophy, Pix. It does indeed look like a MiG-29, and I shall enjoy it as such!
As for brushing the camo, I found that with a little weathering and a stout flat overcoat, brush marks completely disappear. Couldn't avoid hard demarkation lines, though.

I have yet to use an airbrush on an aircraft...I hope what I have learned ABing armor is transferrable to AC!
We shall see...
I have a few more old aircraft I'll post for your perusal!

Hey Brian,

Great looking Mig you got there! I lost my "29" in our last move and haven't replaced it yet, nothing of that caliber though, thanks! (now I'm off to Hobby Lobby)

Take care,
Frank

Handsome 29 I've got three of the Mig series in 1/72 waiting. If any of them turn out half that well, I'll be very happy.

J-Hulk, when I asked for the dimentions, all that I wanted was "about" the dimentions for the model in cementers. Thanks again in advance.Cool [8D]

J-Hulk I like it a lot! That brushed on paint looks amazing! I like the chilli bowl it looks like it's a static display in a memorial garden or something like that. Hope to see more of your old stuff... and wouldn't mind seeing you do a "wingy thingy" for a change now... I know I've been contemplating doing a Sherman or something tracked like that... shhh... don't tell anyone though.

Thanks for all the motivational positive feedback!

Blue 2, if I remember correctly, that model was about 26cn long with a 20cm wingspan. Somewhere around there.

Frank, did you pick up a new "29?"

Yup, it's fun building all kinds of stuff! MiGs, Shermans, Godzillas, Sox & Martin pro stock Hemi Cudas, you name it!
