Questions on best way to make flaps down?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 13, 2003 10:55 AM
Hey Guys, I am now working on a Revell P51D. I would like to modify the flaps to be in the down position. On this particular model the flaps are molded in the wing. What is the best way to do this? Cut the flaps off the wings & reattach in the downed position, or look for an aftermarket flap kit? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Since the P-51 does not have "Fowler " flaps, I'd say cut them off, use a piece of
sprue to make a leading edge for the flap section and reattach them in the down
position. Full flaps would be about 45 degrees from the wing's angle of incidence.

There are a few different types of flaps: plain, split, slotted and fowler. Pick up a book on aerodynamics for a detailed explanation on how each works etc....

To put it in the simplest terms, a fowler flap moves aft a considerable distance as it moves down, thereby increasing the wing area as well as providing more lift.

Blackwolfscd has it exactly right. Fowler flaps would be about the hardest to model since you'd have to build wing structure, flap tracks, and the jackscrews
that operate them.

Thanks guys. I am gonna that when I get a change. It has the nice opening gun detail but no drop flap option. I don't get that. Oh well I like to customize anyway. Thanks again.
