What was a typical bomb load for a battle of Britain raid, such as a raid on a south-eastern airfield or London?

definitly had an internal bomb bay, i've seen a picture of on in flight with the doors open. in the G variants the bomb bay became an ammunition tank for the ventral cannon pod.

Very cool...rarely, however, if ever used in the field...most of the time fuel cells were added in those spaces...

Here we have proof of bomb bays in a JU88

First we have a diagram from a workshop manual

and now two pictures from a JU88 recovered in Norway from the bottom of a lake and currently undergoing restoration.

This picture shows the fuselage upside down. You can see the two bomb bays just to the rear of the gondola.

I think that they have some more stuff coming, but be warned, the bomb bay stuff will mean altering the fuselage somewhat.

Thanks everyone for your help. While searching for the racks I also came across a nicely detailed bomb bay for a Ju88 (resin, I think) but I can't remember where, or who the manfacturer was.

Still, odd that Revell didn't see fit to include the racks......

Although maybe capable in theory and in design, in practice I don't believe the internal capacity of the JU88 was used...I can find no record of it being so...

Pics - me neither I'm afraid.

The two internal bays could hold 28 SC-50's, but the forward bay was given to fuel on the Ju-88A-4 & subsequent models, leaving the rear bay with it's 10 SC-50 capacity - or space for cameras or Schräge Musik contraptions.

The Ju-88A-15 (development only I think) had an enlarged bomb-bay designed for a 3000kg bomb load.

Hmmmmm...I've NEVER seen the internal bomb-bay in refs or pics...anyone have any images of it???  And although the HE111 did have an internal bomb-bay it was rarely used after the BoB...external gfairings were mounted, same as on the JU88...

It looks like 4 were generally fitted, although there are a few images which show only the two inner racks fitted (Ju88-A4).

Sorry to dispute Eric, but the JU88 did infact have an internal bomb load. The aircraft was certified to carry 7935lbs of both internal and external stores.

The external bomb racks were rated for different bombs. the fuselage mounted racks were for the SC1000 bomb and the outboard (wing) mounted racks were for the SC500 bomb. This is why you are seeing two different sizes of bombs in your photograph.

MDC are the only ones that I know of that do the external racks and the fuselage ones are shaped to provide a left and right for the fuselage. They also do the SC500 & 1000 bombs for the racks too.

I am not sure if the racks are removeable hard points, probably not, but they do, when mounted with the correct ordnance add to the model.

The Revell 1/32 does, with care, build up to a great looking model and with the cockpit glass being so large you may want to invest in the Eduard Big Ed set which includes canopy masks and cockpit detail which adds to the detail you can see.

I don't recall ever seeing racks removed but it is possible...how many bombs were carried depended on the mix of size of bombs and distance to target...the JU88 did not have an internal bomb-bay...

I'm thinking of getting Revell's 1/32 Ju88 but apparently it requires the addition of external bomb racks. I did a search and located a nice aftermarket set (Model Design Construction) and also found a photograph of a Ju88 with bomb racks and bombs attached. The bombs appear to be two different kinds, on four racks.

The question is, did they always have the four racks fitted, even though only two may have been in use, or was it common to see just two racks fitted? Confused
