Sealing question
Posted by Bones-coa on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 8:01 PM
Modelers, I know that one should not spray sealer, Future, dull-cote, etc on NMF aircraft. However, how does one go about sealing the decals? In my case, I'm using SNJ.

Thanks

Shoot, I've used Future on metal finshes before, with no problems. 'Course, I didn't enter them in a contest either............. And, it was Testors Chrome SIlver paint, not SNJ, so I'm probably not helping you one bit, am I?

Well, I don't think it's actually bad, but I think it somehow changes the finish. At least, I think that's what I've read.

Any coat oversprayed on a metallic finish will change the reflective properties of the paint. You can spray Future and then a semi-gloss or matte coat over the decals while they're still on the sheet. You then have to trim them carefully, without cutting through the paper, as the overcoat on the sheet will give you a layer across the entire sheet.
Another alternative would be brushing on Future, then your final finish to the decals only, after they have been applied. (the Future will protect the decals from a lacquer dullcoat) The stencils could be tricky, but the larger decals would be easier.
If you try this, try it on scrap first, to see if it gives you the resuts you desire.

Good luck !

Thanks for the info guys. However, I have another question. What about sealing weathering? To be honest, I'm not sure one should even give a NMF aircraft a wash. If so, what would you guys recommend?

Who ever said you can't seal a NM finish? Yes, Bones, you CAN have it all! For me, the ModelMaster clear gloss laquer does the trick, with little or no noticeable dulling of the metal finish. You'll want to seal the model before weathering, anyway, to protect the decals. After weathering, one more coat of clear to seal the weathering. Bada-bing, bada-boom.
